MMORPGs are bad for you?

I know that some people have been yelling for years that games are bad for you and I would usually ignore most of what these people say but when it comes to MMORPGs I can't help but notice that these games sometimes do have a negative effect on people. That doesn't mean that every MMORPG is bad for you but I can see for certain that too much of something is bad for you and perhaps that is the biggest issue with MMORPGs. People play too long and too much of these games and that's never a good thing!

Playing MMORPGs is bad for you?

Well that depends, if you play only an hour or two on a day then that's not so bad. But if you spend ten or more hours on one day on one of these games or any game at all then I'd say that this is bad. But for MMORPGs there are more issues. Things can easily get repetitive and the community isn't always the best to say the least. Have you ever done a raid with random people? Well you might be in for a whole load of toxic bullshit if you're unlucky because the things I've heard people say to eachother during a raid is just beyond all stupidity. Some people take these games way too serious and then there are those who don't take these games serious enough. This causes friction and as you know that is hardly ever a good thing, especially in a game or game mode where you have to work together. You'd think people would come together, be more social and friendly to eachother in MMORPGs but unfortunately this isn't always true. I remember that in WoW people could be unpleasant to play with or just no fun at all. For example a high level player hanging around in the starting area of the blood elves and then constantly challenging everyone to a 1 vs 1 duel. Then there are high level players judging you as they follow you around. People that make it their mission to annoy you, for example when you need to collect a certain item or kill a certain enemy type several times and this person is constantly grabbing these items or killing these enemies in front of your nose. Of course this person can be on the same quest but when they start leaving stupid comments in the chat it starts to look more like a troll is being a dick to other players. These are just examples from one MMORPG but unfortunately this isn't the only game that has these issues. I don't know what happens to people exactly that play a game for too long, I can never play a game for too long, but apparently they turn into douchebags or just go a little bit crazy for doing the same things every day.

So MMORPG players are douchebags?

I wouldn't say that, I've actually met a lot of friendly players as well. People who didn't see it as their mission to be a dick to others and actually want to help. It's just difficult to find these people sometimes because a lot of these people are in a group of friends or in a clan and don't always communicate a lot with people outside of that group or clan. So when you join as a new player then the MMORPG world might seem like a cold and desolate place to be in. But once you meet friendly people, join a group or clan and find your way in the game then things are often a lot better. It's also not fair to just say that MMORPG players are douchebags, in each game there are douchebags. People that want to ruin the fun of others or just act like a dick towards others because they're a lower level then what they are and they can't be bothered to show some kindness. That doesn't mean that all the new players are always a joy to play with. I've seen new players get mad at others because they didn't do what he or she wanted and I've also seen new players ninja loot, take the loot for themselves wether they needed it or not, the rewards and that also causes a lot of friction in a team. I guess you could say that some people just don't really fit into a MMORPG. But unfortunately that doesn't keep so many of these people from joining anyway...

People leave MMORPGs?

Over the past couple of months I've heard several stories of people who used to be big MMORPG players but eventually left because they got tired of the people in the game, the way the game is played and just the game in general. Things get repetitive and eventually you just get bored with it. When you get bored with a game and it's no longer fun to play then why the hell would you still play it? I prefer playing games that make me happy, games that give you a good feeling when you accomplish something or discover something new. This isn't really restricted to one genre and that's a good thing. Going through the same parts of the world with your tenth character and already what is going to happen next but you do it anyway for the experience and the loot doesn't look like fun to me. Sure for the first two or three times but after that it gets old real fast. Maybe with some friends you might last a bit longer but I think that most people get tired of MMORPGs sooner or later. New things might be added over time but honestly who plays these games every day of every year and not get bored or sick and tired of that game? I played Guild Wars 2 every day for a whole month when it launched, I then got so sick and tired of the game that I haven't been able to play it again after that. Which is a shame because it's not a bad game, it's just the way you play it and how things go in the game that can really leave a player drained of energy and then you lose the will to play rather sooner than later. Let's also not forget how certain experiences make you less happy with these games. For example some stupid kid that bosses you around in the raid and then rage quits when something goes wrong, yeah that's great fun! Have you ever been in a clan and people demanded you go on a raid with them or help them with their quest? I mean they don't ask they demand it. Well that became a very easy decision to leave that clan and eventually leave the game. MMORPGs can be fun but for me personally they don't last forever, even if the developers keep putting content in these games it's not meant to be played forever in my opinion. Sooner or later you will get tired of it and it's only natural to move on to something else, such is life and there is nothing wrong with that!
