Multiplayer is changing?

When I first started with online competitive multiplayer I was thrilled, to be able to play against other people and just have fun was a great thing or at least that's what I thought. For the first couple of years that wsa actually true, I did enjoy playing multiplayer and things were good. Sometimes you had some frustrating encounters, for example cheaters or try hards, but nothing that made me want to quit. But now more than a decade later I can't say that I feel the same anymore, multiplayer is just not as much fun as it used to be and now with battle royale getting more popular I can't help but feel like multiplayer isn't for me anymore. It has changed and it keeps changing and not for the best in my opinion.

Multiplayer has changed or have players changed?

Maybe both? Whenever you look at a streamer then there's a good chance that he or she is playing PUBG or Fortnite Battle Royale. Why? Because apparently the majority of the viewers wants to see that and I honestly don't understand it. How is this so popular? But that's not the only thing. With YouTube and Twitch being as big as they are a lot of people record their gameplay and upload videos or stream videos of their gameplay. This brings out more try hards and people that will play incredibly dirty or sad just to secure some wins so they have content to show to their subscribers. It creates a very toxic environment where it's all about winning. This becomes even worse when you look at tournaments where people want to perform well enough to be able to participate and eventually win. With eSports, electronic sports, on the rise and people wanting to be a part of that it has created a certain type of gamer in the multiplayer world. The must win all the time no matter what type of gamer. It's not like these people didn't exist before but in the last five years this is more frequent behaviour in the online competitive multiplayer world and I don't think that's a good thing.

Getting too old for multiplayer?

I've thought about that as well, I'm not exactly twenty anymore and the online competitive multiplayer world is pretty much for the kids and young adults. I'm not saying that you can't play multiplayer games when you're over thirty but I think you'll find yourself surrounded by people that are younger and perhaps more skilled or just more determined to win than you. I wonder how many people above thirty still play online competitive multiplayer because most people I hear aren't that old, I'd say the oldest person I've met (for as far as I know) was 28 and perhaps that says a lot about the games I play or people above thirty are just not that talkative. I could be totally wrong here and I hope I am, because it's a shame when people stop playing certain games because they think they're too old for these games.

You can't stop the change?

All things change, this is something you can't stop and as much as I like things staying the same it's not a realistic view on life. So of course multiplayer changes, I just hope it changes into something I like and not something I don't like. Battle royale is something I don't like and no matter how many people enjoy it I hope it won't be the new standard for multiplayer because that would suck. I still hold on to the hope that other parts of multiplayer will surive, for example some team deathmatch or the more rare infection mode (where players join the team of infected when they're killed and it's over until no one is left or you ran out of time). This is what I like and what I hope to see in multiplayer, but I think that some things might remain. For example team deathmatch is there since the beginning and I can't imagine that they would ever get rid of that. But the gameplay of certain games has changed. Just look at CoD where you had these weird abilities that let you jump high or double jump and then there's the wallrunning which is cool but sometimes people just like things staying the same. I think CoD WW 2 is a good example of that. Such a good succes and then look at CoD Infinite Warfare which is probably the most hated CoD game up to this date. So sometimes things change and sometimes things go back to how they were. That's actually not a bad thing, so I can say with some certainty that I'm not that worried about the future of multiplayer.
