Sinful Sunday: I just want to win!
A lot of times when I play a single player or multiplayer game I have this strong desire to win. Not that I truly care about winning that much but often because of the reward(s) you get when you win. Because let's be honest you often get more experience, better rewards and sometimes even achievements or trophies when you win. So winning definitely has a lot of perks. Unfortunately you can't win all the time and when you play a game there is always a good chance that you lose. Especially when you have to work in a team of other players that have no intention of winning or doing much towards trying to win.
You need to win?
I often feel that urge that I need to win because I want to get the rewards for winning. For example in Overwatch for the loot boxes each week, in CoD WW 2 to complete orders so I can earn a loot box or in Fortnite so I keep the progress I made in the match (if you lose then you don't keep the progress you made towards an objective). Winning is important, even if you don't give a shit about winning a game will make certain that it will be important because when you lose you often get nothing. So this urge to win becomes bigger and bigger and that also creates more stress for the player. This constant need to win and then the negative outbursts when things go wrong. Games aren't really based on having fun, they're often based on succeeding and winning. Which is dumb in my opinion because a game should be all about fun and not about who wins in the end. Sure there are competitive multiplayer games and it's nice you get a reward if you win but it shouldn't all be about that. What's worse if the game puts the focus so much on winning that people will rage quit the moment they think that they're going to lose. That is absolutely not fun for everyone else in the match, especially the people on the team of the rage quitter.
The need to win makes a game more stressful?
I think so because when you want to win all the time and have to deal with defeat, especially when you lose a lot of matches, then this makes you stressed. What if you only need one more win or do one more thing in a match to get that loot box or other reward but somehow you can't seem to get it done for some reason. It makes you stress even more and it will turn you into a toxic scumbag that will yell at team mates because things aren't going well and things often go from bad to worse at that point. All because you have this need to win. Which really makes you wonder why you want to win so badly. Is it because of the reward? You do realize that these rewards aren't that important? I mean at the moment they seem very important, to some people at least, but six months from now do you really care about this reward? I seriously doubt that!
You don't have to win?
Games become a lot more fun to play when you lose your need to win attitude. Of course it's nice when you get a reward and I would lie if I said that I wouldn't care. But to put your focus so strongly on winning because you want to earn that reward means you'll most likely have a bad time in a game. Why? Because you won't win all the time, there will be moments where you lose or where things won't go so well. If you have this strong urge to win all the time to get some rewards you will have to deal with these setbacks and you'll get more frustrated with each match you lose. I prefer to win a match but I learned to let go of that need to win attitude, it has never really brought me a lot of happiness and things can really get ugly if you stick to that need to win attitude. There is nothing wrong with wanting to win but don't make it a big thing, having fun is more important than winning. Because that's most likely the main reason you started with playing games, just to have fun.
