I hate Monday: When that one moment in a game (almost) ruins everything!
It's fun to play games and eventhough almost every game has moments that are less fun it's hardly ever something that makes you want to rage quit. Unfortunately there are some games that will frustrate you so much that rage quitting seems like the only escape from that torture. Sometimes this is just one moment in the game but that one moment can ruin everything!
One bad moment in the game ruins everything?
It might seem ridiculous but I've seen this multiple times in games where I was enjoying the game or at least I wasn't annoyed with it and then that moment happens where you go through a load of bullshit because the game is broken at that point or it's just a very frustrating experience. No matter how much fun that game might be it's that one moment that can ruin your fun with ease. Because if you keep failing, keep having to go through the same cutscene that you can't skip and keep having to hear the taunts or commentary from a character in the game then you just want to throw your computer or console out of the window! Yesterday I played the Back to the future game and it was fine up to the point where you have to do a stupid puzzle, you have to perform certain actions while Doc gives you a clue by mentioning a word what that action is. It seems simple but considering that it sometimes takes a moment to realize what the word means, considering English isn't my native language I don't know the meaning of all the words in English, and then I have to figure out which action I have to perform. What's worse is that you have to do this for about a dozen times in four parts, so that's a total of over fourty times! One mistake and you have to start over, don't do it fast enough and you have to start over and then there is the commentary and cutscene you have to deal with everytime you make a mistake. I felt a strong need to rage quit but I made it through eventually. What really made it difficult is that with each part completed they speed things up, so you almost have to instantly know what Doc means with the words he mentions. Put shitty controls in the game and frustration is born! I'm not going to pretend like this game is amazing but it was almost enough for me to rage quit, because there is only that much frustration you can take until you had enough.
How can one moment ruin everything?
It's often the build up of frustration or when something happens that makes you so annoyed that it just takes away every bit of fun you had in the game and just makes you want to leave and never play it again. I had that with games where I made it almost to the end and then out of nowhere some bullshit happens and instantly kills you and you have to start to do the entire level again. Maybe you feel like doing that and then hoping you don't get screwed over at the end but I honestly hate that! I don't want to be stuck in a game and I definitely don't want to do the same shit over and over again just hoping that this time I will make it. Sometimes there is also a part in the game that just makes you really annoyed with the game or it's just so boring that you really don't feel like doing it. In Dragon Age Origins there's that moment in the fade where you have to turn into several forms to make it further and you have no companions with you so you have to do all the fighting on your own. Absolutely a terrible moment in the game for me and I always hate it so much that I have to go through that. Stupid sloth demon, I keep telling my character to just shoot that thing in the face the moment it starts talking but no just let him talk and go into the fade. Sigh...
Why are these moments in games?
I always thought that developers put these frustration moments in a games to make certain people don't finish their game that quickly. But that still doesn't really make sense to me. I mean why would you want to frustrate players with some bullshit in a game? Would that really be just to slow them down? It seems too ridiculous to me. Maybe it's just me, perhaps things I find annoying other players might enjoy. I guess we all have our own playstyle and our own ideas of what we consider as fun. For example one person can sit the entire multiplayer match camping in the corner and having a good time while another person would be bored out of his or her mind. The thing is that you can't please everyone, almost every game has moments some people like and others will hate. You can't really avoid that and that means you'll have to fight your way through those moments and just hope things get better soon. The worst thing that can happen that you lose interest in playing while you're halfway through the story. That really sucks and I know that unfortunately from experience. You can take a break but sometimes you just never really get that urge to play the game again. I always try to finish games I start playing but sometimes there are just games that have moments that ruin everything and I just can't bring myself to finishing that game. Honestly why would you go through such torture? For some achievements/trophies? Well they can keep them! I prefer playing games that don't frustrate me!
