The art of communication in games
It seems simple, talking with others while playing a game. Unfortunately it´s not! People will often stab you, shoot you or keep bumping in to you because that´s their way of communicating. It´s like giving a caveman a controller and then seeing the result. Then there are people that can´t communicate without being rude, where almost every sentence ends or starts with an insult. But let´s not forget the people that like to be annoying and bring their stand up comedy shit with them. It´s not a surprise that some people prefer to play single player games or don´t plug in their microphone.
Why do people behave differently online?
The main reason is probably because they can, you can say what you want and who is going to stop them? Of course not everything is tolerated but when someone calls you a bitch or a loser then that doesn´t mean that guy or girl gets banned. So some people will say or do stupid and annoying things, mostly because they can and most likely because they can´t in real life. In a way online gaming opens up a portal to say and do things they wouldn´t dare in real life. They wouldn´t admit that but that´s usually how it is. Besides why be respectful towards others when you can be an asshole?
What´s the point of this behaviour?
I seriously doubt that there is a point, half of the time it´s just frustration that makes people behave badly. But sometimes people just like to annoy others. Why? Because that´s the type of world we live in, where it´s amusing to annoy others and then preferbly record that and post it online. We all get annoyed sometimes but I never understand the need to react these negative emotions towards others, when I´m upset and/or frustrated and I have my microphone plugged in then I mute myself. I don´t think it´s nice to say certain things to other players because I´m having a bad time, it´s better to just take a break and get the frustration out of your system. Punch the wall if you have to, but don´t become hostile towards other players because that´s just sad.
So what should you do?
If you feel like talking with other players then plug in your microphone, but not to annoy others but to communicate with them. For example in a team based game you can give a call out or offer support by letting them know where ammo or health is. If you don´t feel like talking then you can keep it to a minimum, but you should realize that if you play a team based game that communication can actually make the difference between winning and losing! You don´t have to be over the top polite, but that doesn´t mean it has to be motherfucker this and bitch that. In the end we´re all people trying to have fun playing games, so let´s try to have fun playing games and leave the drama offline!
