Does it matter how many friends you have?

I´m still surprised when I see someone with hundreds of friends, I say friends but I bet that person doesn´t even know half of them and that becomes even worse on your console when most people in your friends list are people you´ve never met and probably will never meet. But that doesn´t stop people from adding as many friends to their list as possible, the Xbox One alone can already have a thousand friends on one profile. Which is insane because who really has a thousand friends? Not me!

It´s a popularity contest?

Sometimes that´s how it goes, people want to have the most friends because the more people you have in your list the more popular you have to be. Right? Wrong! Oh sure it might seem that way but I bet that people with hundreds of people in their friends list probably only play games with a dozen of them. Let´s not forget that people with whom you really are friends, which means you actually talk and spend time together outside games, are just a very small fraction of the big total of people you have in your friends list. So does it really mean something to have a lot of people in your friends list? Well it means you get a lot of notifications when you play games or watch movies on your console, unless you´re smart enough to turn that off.

What to do with random invites?

The random invite is nothing new, someone invites you to be friends and leaves no message or anything else. It´s easy to accept but why should you? You don´t know this person, this person couldn´t be bothered to first send you a message and he probably has a lot of people in his friends list so the chance that this ´friend´ will actually play games with you is quite small. I know that in some MMORPGs it´s quite common to random invite people to join a party, once again I find this lazy and often don´t accept that because if you can´t be bothered to first send someone a message then why should you be bothered to accept? I know that not everyone is social and to be honest I´m not that social, but that doesn´t mean that it´s ok to just random invite!

Does it really matter?

I guess it doesn´t really matter how many friends you have, quality is definitely more important than quantity! But I can see the appeal of having a lot of people in your friends list, that way there´s usually someone online when you play games and there´s also a good chance that someone is playing the same game as you and you can play that game together if that´s possible. But don´t feel bad if you don´t have a lot of people in your friends list, your friends in real life are more important!
