Sinful Sunday: I hate you, maybe...
Whenever I see or hear people talk to eachother it´s not surprising to hear the word hate used casually, I hate this or I hate you as if it´s just another word to be used just like that. In a way I feel like the word has lost its meaning because if people seem to use it so casually it most likely means that it lost its effectiveness. Or does it still hold some power?
You don´t know what you´re saying?
When you´re angry and/or upset you often say things you don´t really mean, for example a teenager that says he or she hates his or her parents because he or she isn´t allowed to go out. But even among friends it´s not uncommon, for example I hate that you always beat me in games. Do you really hate then? Probably not, but still the word is used to let the other know how you feel. Still it doesn´t seem like this is the correct word to describe your feelings, more appropriate would be to say that your parents suck for not letting you go out or that you don´t like it that your friend keeps beating you in games.
We´ve become angrier?
It´s not a surprise to me, I´ve noticed that I´ve become angrier over the years. Sometimes even little things can piss me off. I´m pretty certain I´m not the only one and so it makes me wonder what kind of effect this has. Because when you´re angry you say certain things faster then when you´re not angry, so hate is used more often because when you´re angry you don´t want to be civilized but more in your face! This isn´t just for gamers (like me), it´s also something you see in traffic, in the office and in schools. We´re less likely to take crap and when something bothers us we show the others how we feel about that, sometimes in extreme ways. It´s even worse when you bottle up feelings of anger, then when it finally breaks out it will be ten times worse!
Do we need new words or perhaps a time out?
In an episode of Scrubs (comedy) one of the characters (Doctor Cox) says that hate has lost all meaning to him, so from that moment he says he loathes people instead of hate. I wonder if that would be the best idea, come up with new words to give a stronger meaning to them. But at the same time I also feel like we should take it easy, instead of putting the focus on the negative we can also think about taking it easy. A stressful job or study can make you irritated, so it´s a good idea to relax and do something that takes the stress and thus irritation away. There is already a lot of hate in the world, so much that the word is starting to lose its meaning and it becomes quite common to say. I don´t think that´s a good thing, so perhaps we should take it easy and think before we say something we don´t really mean. Sometimes you can make the world a little bit better, just one step at a time.
