Companions in a game or not?

In some single player games you get companions, NPCs that follow you around and sometimes even assist you in battle. For some this makes the game more interesting but for others it´s just frustration and/or a waste of time. So do we really need companions in a game? I guess that depends on you...

Why do we have companions in a game?

In the old games it´s rare to see a character that has a companion, sure Final Fantasy is known for that but not everyone game was so hot for introducing more characters than the main character. This keeps it simple, but sometimes also a bit boring. It didn´t take that long for game designers to see the benefits of a companion. So Mario gets Yoshi and Sonic gets Tails. But why stop there? Just look at your random Mario and/or Sonic game and you see that they´re not exactly alone, a lot of characters have been added to the Mario and to the Sonic worlds. In a race or party game the extra characters give you and your friends a chance to play with other characters than the ones you usually play in a more standard game version. You could say that companions bring diversity in a game, the personalities and sometimes background stories add more flavour to the game and makes it a bit more interesting to play and discover all that. But if you´re not interested in that then you can at least play as someone else or if possible fool around with the other characters.

A companion can be your best friend?

Well maybe not a best friend as in real life but it can be someone that makes you laugh or perhaps even cry. Games can definitely have a strong effect on the player(s), just look at the game Lost Odyssey where there is a scene that makes you cry like a baby. I won´t spoil it, but it´s very sad. You can form friendships or even relationships with your companions, just look at some Bioware games like Dragon Age or Mass Effect. Especially if you see these characters in other games and they become more than just another character in a game, they become a familiar face and someone you care for. Even if it´s just in a game, it can sometimes have more meaning than people you meet in real life.

Does every game need companions?

No I don´t think so, because too much of something isn´t good. Besides not every game is really made for that, adding a companion or more than one in every game would make it weird and I don´t think that you want companions when you´re playing a survival horror game or a bad ass first person shooter. Sometimes you just want to go crazy and have fun, companions don´t always fit in that catagory. Sure you can have fun but when they judge your actions it doesn´t really make you look good when you slaughter people left and right. But in some games it might work, still I don´t think it´s a good idea to force this in games. By keeping companions only in certain games you keep it interesting and it makes those games a bit more special.
