Why should you play survival horror games in the dark?

It´s easy to say that it´s scarier to play in the dark but there´s more to it, for example people with a lot of imagination will have a rough time playing a survival horror game in the dark because their imagination will make things worse for them. It´s usually just in your head but in the dark things are often scarier because you can´t see what´s really going on, mix that with a game that makes you feel uncomfortable and you´ve got the perfect combination for everyone that likes creepy things!

But what makes it so creepy?

When you´re watching a horror movie you can easily look away when it´s too scary for you, but when you play a game you can´t look away because then your character in the game is vulnerable and you probably want him or her to survive. Which means you´ll have to look and because you´re sitting alone in the dark with your headphones on (which is how you should play survival horror games) there is no safe place, you´ll have to deal with what´s in front of you. This also makes survival horror games, especially if you play them as their meant to be played, too scary for some people!

Why would you even play a game like that?

This might surprise you but some people just like creepy things, they like to scare themselves and go through some scary moments in games because for them that´s fun. Sometimes people also like to test themselves, to see how much they can take and/or like to brag of beating a very scary game. It´s not that people will suddenly respect you because you beat a scary game but it´s more a personal victory, if that´s worth something to you then you already have a good reason to play a survival horror game in the dark. In a way it´s a bit like cheating to play a survival horror game in the afternoon or with the lights on, because it´s less scary that way and it kind of ruins the experience.

But you don´t have to play a game in the dark?

Of course not! Nobody forces you to do anything, I´m just saying that if you play a survival horror game that it´s more fun to play in the dark. This makes the experience a bit scarier and offers you a bigger challenge to beat the game. But I don´t think you´re a coward if you don´t like that, some people just can´t handle certain things that well and it´s nothing to be ashamed of. With that said I would like to add that I wouldn´t spread that around too much, not everyone will understand and some people can be assholes about it. Just remember that usually people that shout the loudest are the biggest cowards, they just try to hide their own fear with making a lot of noise!
