Sinful Sunday: Relationships make the life of a gamer complicated?

It probably sounds ridiculous, especially to people that think that gamers are losers who can´t even get a boyfriend or girlfriend. But a relationship can definitely change the life of a gamer, at least if he or she is willing to change. If you´re being a piece of shit then you´ll most likely go on as you always have and you probably won´t be in a relationship for long. Maybe that´s a bit of speculation but let´s be realistic and say that it´s not nice if you put games before your boyfriend or girlfriend!

How does a relationship make the life of a gamer complicated?

It would depend what kind of gamer you are, I mean if you´re a casual gamer then not much will change because you don´t play games for that long on a day. But if spend a lot of hours (more than six hours on a day) on gaming then that might make things awkward in your social life, especially when your boyfriend or girlfriend doesn´t share your passion for gaming. Which means that you´ll have to adapt to make the relationship work, so it will require you to spend less time on playing games and more time on your boyfriend or girlfriend. This doesn´t have to be a problem when you play a lot of solo games, because you can play that in your own time whenever you want. But if you´re part of a group of gamers and you always play together in team based or co-op adventures games then they will probably not be happy with that!

So gaming should always come first?

That´s probably not a good idea if you want to stay in a relationship, because even when your boyfriend or girlfriend also likes to play games (that´s not always a guarantee) then I can imagine that he or she won´t be happy if you spend most of the time playing games instead of spending some quality time together. Maybe you think it´s ok that he or she sits next to you while you play games but I doubt that many people would like that! So if you want the relationship to last then you´ll have to change, which means less time for playing games (wether that´s solo or playing with friends) and that can be rough for some die hard gamers. But you really have to ask yourself this question, is this someone you really like? If so then you might want to do your best to keep him or her happy, it doesn´t mean you have to give up on gaming but a bit less time spend on gaming and a bit more time spend on your boyfriend or girlfriend isn´t a bad thing.

A boyfriend or girlfriend isn´t a bad thing then?

It´s not, but sometimes your friends won´t always understand that and consider you as an asshole for spending more time on your boyfriend or girlfriend instead of spending time with them playing games. I´d say a true friend would understand, but a selfish scumbag probably won´t understand. But you should realize that if you go from every day playing games together to once a week playing games together that it can be rough for some people to adjust to that. Especially if your friend is single and has a lot of spare time, that´s when he or she will notice it for certain that you´re not that much online anymore. So my advice is not to forget about your friends, it´s good that you make time for your boyfriend or girlfriend but you should definitely also make time for your friends. Even if you don´t have friends that play games then it´s still important that you make time for them!
