Saints Row IV: Gat out of Hell is worth checking out?

If you bought Saints Row IV re-election then you also got Gat out of Hell with it, but is this stand alone dlc just as much fun as Saints Row IV or not? I can´t help but feel like Gat out of Hell is a bit of an experiment, where you don´t control the boss of the 3rd Street Saints but you play as someone else. Maybe this is a one time thing but it could mean something for Saints Row V. Who knows...

In Gat out of Hell you play as Johnny Gat?

Yes, but you can also play as Kinzie Kensington. But most things in this stand alone dlc point towards Johnny, not just some of the achievements/trophies but also the funniest parts in the game are claimed by Johnny. That doesn´t mean it´s not rewarding to play as Kinzie, she has her own commentary on certain locations and confrontations with certain people. You also get achievements/trophies if you play for two hours with Johnny and two hours with Kinzie, discover all 50 commentaries for both Johnny and Kinzie. It doesn´t really matter with whom you play, it all leads to the same point. But I did have a lot of fun playing as Johnny, his commentary is pretty funny.

Can you really get achievements/trophies in this game?

You can actually get up to a thousand gamerscore in this game which is quite unique for dlc, even for stand alone dlc. Most achievements/trophies aren´t that difficult but you can miss some, for example shooting down a rocket from one of the tentacles in Hell is something you can miss if you destroy all tentacles before you got the achievement/trophy. Some achievements/trophies are a bit of a pain to get, for example spending twenty hours in Hell achievement/trophy is a bit lame because you´ll most likely finish the game within half that time and then have to spend about ten hours roaming around to just get that achievement. But for the die hard achievement/trophy hunters there is definitely something to gain here!

Is this game just like Saints Row IV?

Not exactly, you do have super powers but it´s a bit different. First of all you´re not in a simulation but in Hell, so here you get arcane powers but they´re not that different from the super powers in the simulation. Stone blast is a lot like the freeze blast and even the aura and the stomp power are almost the same as the ones from Saints Row IV. The only completely new power is the summon power where you can summon creatures to assist you in a fight. Some of the activities are also a lot like the ones you saw in Saints Row IV, for example Hellblazing is almost the same as blazing but now you glide through the air with your wings and a lot of the survival activities want you to kill that many enemies to advance which is pretty much the same as in Saints Row IV. But you also have new activities such as salvation where you have to catch fallen souls to save them and smacking college demons with paddles into rings is also something new. Your wings allow you to glide for a moment, until you run out of stamina, and that also gives you super sprint. This gliding takes some getting used to but once you master it then it´s a lot of fun!

So is Gat out of Hell fun to play?

Absolutely! I´ve had a lot of fun playing it and it´s the same crazy fun as you´re familiar with in the Saints Row games. Eventhough the game is a bit short, which isn´t surprising for dlc, it´s still fun to play and to discover new things like the seven sins weapons or all the commentaries. Beating the game won´t take you that long and capturing the entire city isn´t that much of a challenge, but completing all challenges will probably keep you busy for a bit longer. You can also play with a friend and then he or she will play as the other character (either Johnny or Kinzie, depending on your choice), this makes the game even more fun so if you know someone that also has the game then I can defintely advice you to team up! Gat out of Hell is an unexpected surprise that is fun to play, feel free to check it out if you haven´t done so already.
