Too many zombie games?
I´ve heard people complain about this for several years and to be honest I do see their point because there are a lot of zombie games. But the real question is, do you like zombie games? Because as long as people like playing zombie games then you´ll keep seeing new zombie games appear!
Too much of something is a bad thing?
That´s true, but it´s more than just that. I enjoy playing zombie games and as long as you´re having fun playing a game then does it really matter that it´s another zombie game? I don´t think there are other creatures out there that are as much fun to shoot as zombies. For me fun is important in games, so if zombie games can offer me the fun I´m looking for then I don´t see the problem. But at the same time there does seem to be a big supply of zombie games and the quality isn´t that great in some of them. Which is a shame but that doesn´t make all zombie games bad!
Could zombies be replaced by another creature in a game?
It´s possible but that would depend what type of game you´re making, for example in CoD Black Ops zombie mode I don´t think it would work if you fight against vampires or werewolves. Infinity Ward actually tried it with some alien like creatures but that wasn´t a big succes, especially when you compare it to the zombies from Treyarch. Games like Dead Rising would be less fun if it was full of aliens or robots, the title of the game wouldn´t be making much sense either but the point is that zombies make that game fun and of course all the crazy things you can do in Dead Rising. So it´s difficult to replace zombies and maybe in some situations it´s close to impossible.
What makes shooting zombies so much fun?
Zombies are a threat, but not just a threat as in they can hurt you but a threat because they could turn you and any other human into a zombie. The slow zombies are a menace when you face a big number of them, but the fast ones can be lethal when it´s just one of them. In a way shooting zombies is a free pass when it comes to shooting people, because zombies used to be people and often you can see that they used to be a person. For example in CoD Modern Warfare 2 you can shoot innocent people, this caused a lot of disturbance and it made several people (usually people that don´t know shit about games) mad and wanted to ban the game. But then you take a lot of zombies and you can shoot them and suddenly it´s ok, oh I´m not saying that no one would object but it wouldn´t create a shitstorm as you´d get with shooting innocent people in a game. So it´s not just fun to shoot zombies but it´s also safer for game developers. So can you really blame them? Of course some just try to get a quick buck out of it but usually you can recognize the good zombie games in the sea of bad ones.
