Friendly bots are always stupid?
When you´re not a big fan of teaming up with other players certain games give you the option to play with bots, but that can be a frustrating experience! I think we all played games where you face enemies that are just terrible, they charge at you and drop like flies, and the good thing is that this helps you advance in a game. But when these bots are in your team then you´re in trouble, because they´ll constantly die and make the dumbest decisions possible. So I´m really wondering if there are any smart bots out there, if so then there can´t be that many!
People are better than bots?
In most games that´s true, because even a bad player can do things better than a bot that just dies because of stupidity. With a player you can communicate and strategize a bit, a bot will just charge in and die. Unfortunately players can also be annoying or deliberately sabotage the mission and get everyone killed. So it might be smart to stick with people you know or at least those that you enjoy playing with. Because when it comes to frustrating people I´d rather try my luck with bots!
So why do some people prefer to play with bots?
I think most people that prefer to play with bots are people that don´t enjoy playing games with other people, but it might also have something to do with trying to get certain achievements/trophies in a game. Not everyone is comfortable playing with strangers and if you don´t know anyone that plays a certain game then they might prefer to try their luck with bots. Maybe this sounds stupid to some people but a couple of bad experiences with strangers can keep some players away from multiplayer. So it´s nice that they can at least play with bots, it´s not exactly the same as with people but if that works for them then why judge them for it?
Not every bot is terrible?
In an ocean of games with terrible bots there are also some games where bots have intelligence and don´t behave like morons. A good example of that is Elizabeth in Bioshock Infinite, she throws you ammo when you need ammo and health when you need health. But she also finds items, she can open locked doors and what´s probably most important she stays out of trouble! Unlike Ashley in Resident Evil 4 Elizabeth can´t be kidnapped or hurt at all, the enemies will focus on you and that gives Elizabeth the chance to help you out a lot. So I think there is still hope for bots in games, eventhough bots like your partners in crime in Pay Day 2 are a good example of how it shouldn´t be. It´s going to be interesting what the future brings but I hope that it´s going to be good, because bots give some people an alternative to playing with strangers and that´s a good thing because it´s not fun to be forced into playing with others.
