Sinful Sunday: Loot in games

It´s not a surprise that people want to get nice things in games, for example getting loot in a game can lead to some nice things. But what if you constantly get bad loot? How do you motivate yourself to keep going? Does this change your attitude in the game? Let´s take a closer look at loot in games.

Unlucky or impatient?

When it comes to loot drops in games it´s important that you´re patient, you hardly ever see people get good things in the first loot drop and even when they do get something good that is usually the best thing they´ll get for the rest of the day. I know that there are sometimes people out there that seem to get a lot of good things, you can be jealous or you can just focus on your own characters and hope for the best. It´s important that you´re patient, if you´re impatient then I wouldn´t recommend playing games where the loot drops are random. Because there is a good chance that you spend hundreds of hours on a game and still don´t get what you want. Some would call that unlucky and I´m not saying that it´s not, but don´t let that discourage you because sooner or later you´ll get something good. I just hope for your sake that it doesn´t take another hundred hours...

Greed or need?

In some games, for example World of Warcraft, you have the greed or need choice. This means that people with the need (that can actually use the item and could definitely use it) get priority over people that select greed, because greed usually means someone wants to sell the item on the market or break it down for materials. In a way it´s a good system to allow the people that actually need an item to get it easier instead of just random selection and that someone could get the item who can´t even use it. Unfortunately if a lot of people select need the chance of getting the item becomes a lot smaller, so it does help if you play with friendly people that don´t try to screw you over.

Buying or finding?

When I look at a game like Destiny then I hear a lot of complaints about the loot drops, it´s often stuff they don´t need or sometimes what they can´t even use ( for example as a warlock you get a titan class item). Bungie offers unlucky and/or impatient players a chance to buy a rare item (in Destiny those are often exotic armor and weapons), this makes it easier for you to get your hands on rare items and you don´t have to wait until you finally get lucky with a loot drop. Some people hate it that people can buy rare items, they find this unfair and don´t want this in the game. But is this really unfair? Sure it can be rough that after a lot of time you finally got that rare item in a loot drop and then a week later it´s for sale, but imagine people that played for many hours and never get the item. So it´s just screw you scrub? I think people deserve a chance to get rare items, especially when they don´t have friends to help them get these rare items in a dungeon or raid. So selling rare items is a way for unlucky and/or impatient players to get these rare items, maybe it´s not entirely fair but since they paid for it I don´t think it´s really unfair either!

Loot games aren´t for everyone?

Unfortunately that´s true, because loot games can be extremely frustrating and if you don´t have a lot of patience then it´s not a good idea to play them. It does help if you play with friends or at least friendly people, they can help you out finding good items and that should make things a bit less frustrating. But diving into a loot game solo hoping for the best can be a long and frustrating journey, so I hope you´re ready for that otherwise you might want to stick to other games.
