Sinful Sunday: Trying to be nice?
Whenever I play games online with other people, mostly with random strangers, then I try to be nice. At least up to a certain point. I won't shoot them on sight and I won't try to annoy them, but if someone is making your life miserable then it's very tempting to treat them the same way. It's easy to give in to frustration and be an annoying douchebag but it's really the trick to keep your head cool and let it slide.
Forgive and forget?
This is of course easier said than done. For example if you play Rainbow Six Siege and some asshole on your team kills you and you spend four minutes waiting until the round has ended then you can imagine that you feel a certain need to get revenge. Of course it's not always on purpose that someone kills you, but there are definitely douchebags out there that do it on purpose and someone that shoots you in the first ten seconds usually does that on purpose. It also becomes quite clear when they teabag you afterwards. Maybe the right thing to do is to forgive and forget, but let's not forget that these assholes might try to do this again in the next round and so on. So you can be nice and try to ignore that, you can be the mature one and just leave the match because nothing good comes from staying in the match or you can get revenge and shoot the shit out of the loser that keeps team killing you.
Do you give up on being nice?
With certain games I try to communicate, for example in Overwatch I try to communicate and help team mates. But when everyone stays silent and ignores you then it's difficult to stay nice or to even keep being optimistic and continue to communicate. It's so easy to slide into a pessimistic state of mind and assume that no one communicates and that it's probably best to stop trying to communicate or being nice. I'm not pretending like I'm always nice, but it's really the lack of communication and people trying to work together that keeps people from wanting to play with other people. Sure a lot of games pretty much force people to play together but when no one communicates or wants to work together then you can imagine that there's a good chance that you're going to lose to every team that does communicates and does work together! At these times I'd rather just play a single player game and lose myself in my own world, at least there I don't have to try and work together with people that clearly don't want to play games with you apparently.
