For Honor, a fancy Dynasty Warriors game?
The first moment I saw For Honor I couldn't help but get the idea that I was looking at the latest Dynasty Warriors game. In case you don't know what Dynasty Warriors is then it comes down to a lot of NPCs on screen that move around and I guess attack eachother but most actions will have to come from the player and those actions are mostly hack and slash. For Honor is more than hack and slash though, it might even make people that don't enjoy hack and slash interested in this game.
This is not a hack and slash game?
Well it is, but at the same time it offers more than just pressing a button for attacking. For example you have multiple stances and depending on your stance it will determine if you can hit your enemy. So if you face an enemy with a high guard, you pick a low stance and you can hit him. If you would pick a high stance then that won't work and the enemy will deflect your attacks. This gives the game a bit more than just your average hack and slash adventures. Of course there is also a story that devides three groups or cultures if you want to be more exact and makes you pick on of these three groups. The first group are the Knights, the second group are the Vikings and then last but not least are the Samurai. Each group has their own heroes, type of weapons and fighting style. But once you pick a group you're comitted to that group, so you should pick your group wisely or just start a new game in the campaign. You get all kinds of missions, in a gameplay trailer you see the Vikings attack a Samurai stronghold in a fierce siege.
What makes this game interesting?
The three different groups/factions/cultures are definitely interesting, I don't know if it will be interesting enough to go through the campaign three times as all three groups but hopefully it will be fun enough to at least get through it once. Also the combat system is interesting, because now your stance will play a big part in the game and it's not just hack and slash. You actually have to watch your enemies to know what works best instead of just rushing in. Of course you can just go for the simple hack and slash and you might even get away with that, but some enemies are tougher and especially in boss fights you will most likely find a big obstacle if you keep trying with the simple hack and slash tactics. But the game isn't a masterpiece, it's still you on a map with a lot of NPCs that will most likely need you to do most things. Maybe if you do a certain objective, for example open a gate, it will motivate them to fight harder and that might make them more useful in a fight but at the same time I get the feeling that 90% of all the kills will be for the player. I think that For Honor might actually be an improved Dynasty Warriors type of game but at the same time it's still a Dynasty Warriors type of game, so that's something you either like or something you don't like.
