Super hero games are impossible?
There are a lot of different games out there, all types of genres with good games and bad games in that genre. But there is one genre that suffers the most, the super hero genre where games are usually not good. Sure there are some games that are fun but that´s quite rare and you´ll most likely find a bad game than a good game. So what´s up with super hero games? What makes this genre so difficult? Will we ever get great super hero games or is that impossible?
There aren´t any good super hero games?
Well there are some but then again not every game with a guy or girl in a costume is super powered. For example the succesful Batman Arkham games let you play as Batman and you´d think that´s a super hero game but it doesn´t play as one, because if you run towards enemies with guns there is a good chance that you´re dead. Perhaps that´s the way it should be for Batman because he doesn´t use those type of tactics on his own. So what about one of his super powered allies? Well Superman doesn´t have a good game, at least not one that makes it a lot of fun to play as him and the same counts for the other super heroes in the DC Universe. Marvel on the other hand has had a bit more luck with that, for example Spiderman had some good games, the X-men had some good games and even Wolverine on his own had at least one good game. So it´s not impossible, it´s just difficult and that probably makes it less attractive for developers to make a super hero game.
Do super hero movies help making a good super hero game?
You would think that it would help but I´m not so certain about it, because movie games are usually not a huge succes either so tying a super hero game to a super hero movie might be mistake. That doesn´t mean that it can´t be connected, but it´s probably a smart idea to create your own story instead of following the movie. That doesn´t make movies a bad thing, they can definitely help promote a super hero game or at least let people become more familiar with a hero. I just hope super hero games stand on their own legs and don´t need a movie for inspiration.
Are super hero games impossible?
I don´t think so, but I do think that some heroes are a bigger challenge than others. For example Superman is one of those heroes that is a big challenge, because how can you make a game fun without turning it into a load of crap. Because if a regular enemy could defeat Superman just like that then people will complain, but if you can beat everyone just like that (which is probably pretty close to how it would be if you´re Superman) then people will also complain. It´s the trick to find something in the middle that makes it fun to play but also interesting to play, because you don´t want to beat a game in a day and then be done with it! What I like is when you can create your own hero and/or villain in a world full of heroes and villains, then you can make your own story and go on your own adventures with someone you created. For example in City of Heroes/Villain you could do that but also in DC Universe Online you have that option, for me this is the best because you decide how your hero or villain looks and what he or she can do. Perhaps that is the future for super hero games, you make the heroes and villains and decide what happens. It would be a bold move for developers but I´d like to see it happen!
