Gaming helps against depression?
Don´t worry I won´t go into the science behind it but apparently gaming helps some people go through difficult times. Think about people that lost someone important in their life or when other bad things happen in your life, it can be rough to go through these bad times but games can actually help you with that!
Gaming makes you feel better?
I´m not saying that every game helps you with that and it doesn´t work for everyone, but gaming can help if you let it. For example when you lose someone important in your life it can be difficult to deal with that on your own and when you don´t feel like talking about it with other people it can make you feel even worse. Games like Dragon Age or Skyrim offer you big worlds with a lot of things to do, this isn´t just a good distraction but also helps you feel better by doing things in the game. For example building a house in Skyrim, becoming friends with your companions in Dragon Age or just go on adventure and discover new things in both games.
For every person a different game?
Of course we´re not all the same and maybe you need other games to help you through a difficult time, perhaps playing a first person shooter is more your thing or a platform game. Whatever works for you, just make certain that it helps and not make you feel worse. If you´re more of a lone wolf then it might not be a good idea to play in online multiplayer, but that doesn´t mean you should lose yourself in a single player game. It´s a good idea to mix it up a bit and have fun, you probably know best what´s fun for you.
Too much gaming isn´t a good thing?
As much as gaming might help you get through a difficult time, it´s important that you don´t lose yourself in a game. There is still a world outside the game world and that will keep going, by shutting yourself off from the real world you don´t actually help yourself but make things worse. So don´t forget to go outside and socialize a bit, because it does help to talk with others and it doesn´t all have to be serious. When you´re dealing with a serious depression then it´s a good idea to seek help from a professional, please don´t see games as the next best thing! But games are a nice distraction and can definitely help with feeling a bit better, even if it´s just a little bit.
