Unusual characters in fighting games
If you´ve played a fighting game then you probably know that there are usually a couple of unusual characters in the game, some have a weird look and others have a strange fighting style. But somehow they still fit in with the game, eventhough Tekken goes a bit far with the bear and kangaroo. As weird as that might sound it´s not the strangest thing, what´s even weirder for me is to find some characters from movies in these fighting games. Does that make sense? Probably not...
It doesn´t matter with which character you play?
You might think that but I disagree, because each character has his or her own unique skills and that makes it not a good character for everyone. Some people like fast character with weaker hits and then there are people that like slower characters with more powerful hits. It´s also not a surprise that some characters are just rubbish and others overpowered, so it actually does matter which character you choose. For example if you face someone that plays as one of the overpowered characters, a character that has a move that can´t be blocked or that you can easily spam, then you want to counter that with a character that also has such qualities. At least if you want to stand a chance against the other player.
Characters from movies or other games don´t belong in a fighting game?
Some love it and others hate it, special characters that are placed in a fighting game to appeal to more players. For example Yoda and Darth Vader in Soul Calibur IV, a lot of people hated that and said that this ruined the game. But there are also players, probably Star Wars fans, that loved this and hope to see more of that. It´s difficult to make everyone happy with a game, there will always be people that hate the decisions a developer makes and if a developer starts thinking too much how to please the fans instead of just doing his or her thing then that will most likely affect the quality of the game. But I must admit that I´m not really looking for characters outside the fighting game universe to be put into the fighting game, it just feels wrong and forced (no pun intended). With Jason and Predator in Mortal Kombat X I wonder if people will really like that or if it´s just an attempt to lure more people to the game. I don´t think Mortal Kombat X needs that but then again I´m not really into fighting games so what do I know...
Should there be a fighting game for movie characters?
I think that would be interesting, because that way people can play as their favourite character from a movie and beat the shit out of other characters. You can have your own Freddy vs Jason fight, Ash vs Neo or the Predator vs an Alien. There are so many options to choose from and it could definitely be something interesting, but if this stand alone product would work without some of the familiar faces from popular fighting games remains to be seen.
