Looking back at.....Age of Empires III!

Ever since the first Age of Empires game I really enjoyed the way you play these games, it´s simple and yet gives you the chance to go into detail. For example creating your unbeatable army, a solid economy and a legendary culture. But it was usually just fighting battles from the history books, there wasn´t a hero and not a real story that ties it all together. But then there´s Age of Empires III, a game that does have a story and one that connects over generations!

Make your own legacy!

I really like following a story, something that connects everything and is interesting to check out instead of just going from random battle into another random battle. Of course you´ll have to start with building up a camp, which can grow into a city if you´re really going to invest, but there are also moments where it´s more about exploring or fighting. This diversity keeps the game interesting and doesn´t feel like you do the same thing in every chapter. Don´t be surprised if things go different then you thought, let´s not forget that you play a story that takes place in different generations so one moment you face the early explorers and after that you might face Native Americans or colonists.

Freedom.

You don´t have to play the campaign, you can also create your own maps and play your own type of games. Wether that´s against computer controlled opponents or other players is up to you. You can choose to play as the Spanish, British, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, German and Ottoman civilization. Each civilization has its own benefits but also certain weaknesses, it´s up to you to figure out what works best for you. It´s usually smart to work your way through the ages (discovery, colonial, fortress, Industrial and imperial age) so you can defeat your opponent with an overwhelming power. But you can play the way you want to play, so it doesn´t have to be war but it can also be about trading or making allies that help you in battle. I love this type of freedom and it really makes it fun to play.

A game for the less experienced RTS gamer.

What I like about Age of Empires games is that it´s not difficult to learn and yet still gives you a lot of options to become a real expert. More experienced players will probably still kick your butt but at least it´s a good way to learn and that´s something that this game help you with, you learn a lot! I´m not saying that you´re going to be the best if you play this game but it´s a good way to learn about RTS games and doesn´t raise the bar too high which makes it almost impossible for new players to learn it. Age of Empires III is about fun and learning new things, it´s a great game to learn something and having fun playing it. It´s not the best game in the Age of Empires series but it´s absolutely worth checking out!
