Controller vs motion control
When I think of the future I think of things becoming better and faster, but what is actually better and faster? Instead of pressing buttons you wave at a device and that identifies it as a certain command, does that seem like it´s better and faster?
Motion control is unreliable?
As much as you might hate a controller it´s pretty reliable, ok you need to charge it or if you still use batteries then you have to switch that every week or so but at least it works. Motion control is a bit less stable, if you don´t makethe right movement or somehow the camera doesn´t recognize you then you´re in for a lot of frustration. Let´s not forget how ridiculous it looks when you stand in front of your tv making these weird gestures, I don´t know about you but after a long day of school and/or work I don´t feel like doing that! But the most important thing is that it works, you don´t want to waste time making it work you just want it to work. Motion control can work, it can definitely work well but it´s just not the most reliable and fastest way of gaming. Maybe I´ve just used the controller for too long to switch to something new, but I seriously doubt I´m the only one that isn´t a fan of motion control gaming.
Controllers are weird?
It´s true, some controllers are weird and yes I´m looking at you Nintendo! The NES and SNES controllers are ok, a bit small but there´s nothing weird about those controllers. The N64 controller was already looking a bit weird but it´s surprisingly good! The Gamecube controller was a bit closer to the SNES controller with some N64 controller influence but still quite usuable. But then you get the Wii and the Wii U controllers, what the hell is that?!!! Oh some people might like that but I bet that a lot of people look at those things as if they´re some crazy prototype that somehow found its way in the shops. I think Microsoft and Sony make much better controllers, well the Sony controller is still a bit small for some American and European gamers but it´s still pretty good. Controllers don´t have to be fancy or weird, just make certain that the controllers feels good in your hands and that the buttons are easy to reach.
Will motion control eliminate controllers?
Not in the near future and definitely not the type of motion control I´ve been seeing so far. It´s more like a thing for some games than actually a way of gaming, at least that´s how I see it. Maybe the next generation of gamers will prefer motion control, perhaps it´s much better then but until that moment I think a lot of gamers just prefer to use a controller or the keyboard and mouse. I do think there is a future for motion control and/or virtual touchpads, but for me that´s still future talk and it could take quite some time before we see this replace the trusted hardware we use now!
