Looking back at.....Stratego!
Wether you like strategy or not, anyone can play Stratego and with some good positioning of your troops you can be a wothy opponent! It´s a typical 1 vs 1 game where it´s not about speed or skill, it´s more about tactic and luck. This might make it less interesting for some people but this at least gives anyone that plays it a chance to win, even from more experienced players. Each player has a certain amount of troops from a certain rank, a higher rank beats a lower rank (except bombs that kill everyone except the miner/sapper) and once you get the highest piece of the opponent then it´s as good as over. This highest piece the Marshall is almost unbeatable but a spy could kill that piece or you can beat a Marshall at the expense of your own Marshall. You don´t see what the pieces of the other player are until you jump with one of your pieces on it, then you´ll see if you made a good choice or not...
Strategy.
When you call a game Stratego then it´s not a surprise that it´s about strategy, this strategy can mean put your important pieces in the back and your weak pieces up front. But that´s not the only strategy, sometimes it´s smart to put higher ranked pieces up front so you can clean house in the enemy team when they put lower ranked pieces up front. Then there are people that like to create a minefield, this is where they put several bombs in a certain area that will kill everyone except the miner/sapper. Stratego is designed in such a way that every piece has a potential enemy, this keeps things interesting and if you place your pieces poorly then you´ll see the other player destroy you without too much effort!
Memory game.
It´s not just about strategy, it´s also a good game for your memory. Because once a piece on the other side has been reveal when it strikes one of your pieces or you struck it with one of your pieces then it turns around again and it´s a matter of your memory being able to remember what that piece is. It seems simple but when you look at dozens of pieces all looking the same from the backside then it´s easy to lose track of what one specific piece is, so you can imagine this only gets worse if you try to remember more than one! It helps though if you count the places on the board, that´s actually something that helps you remember where one piece is. But don´t forget that some pieces can be moved around and then it´s easy to lose track of them. Especially when you´re busy trying to keep an eye on your own pieces and when you plan your next attack.
New versions.
Stratego also became available in a digital version, but there is also a four player version where you could be attacked on multiple sides! This creates an even more intense game and you could potentially form an alliance with another player, for the moment of course because in the end there can only be one winner! It´s interesting that an old board game stays fresh with new ideas and new versions of it, that keeps it fun to play and it´s definitely worth checking out! Wether you like the board game or the digital version, it´s a fun game to play!
