Parents don´t know much about gaming?
It´s often said that parents don´t know anything about gaming, because you constantly see kids (under 12 years) playing games they shouldn´t play (16+ games). How can a parent let their kid play something like that? What some people forget is that a lot of parents do their best, but sometimes it´s difficult to figure out what their kids do exactly when the parents aren´t looking.
Being a parent is difficult?
Big surprise, well not really but being a parents is difficult. Anyone that says that it´s easy doesn´t know what he or she is talking about or is an idiot! What some people sometimes forget is that parents work, these days it´s even common that both parents work which makes it a bit difficult to check all the time what your kids are up to. Not that you´d leave your kids home alone but it´s not uncommon that sometimes kids are back home before the parents are and that does give them some freedom, for both good or bad things. I think you can expect that most parents would do their best, but you can´t expect someone to be there all the time checking what their kids are up to.
Parents don´t know much about gaming?
Well my parents never knew anything about gaming, I could´ve played survival horror games and told them I´m playing some cute platform game. I think young parents are a bit better informed what´s going on but if your parents never got into gaming and have absolutely no interest in gaming then there is a good chance they don´t know much about gaming. In a way you could tell them whatever you want about the games you play and probably get away with that! But just because you can do something it doesn´t mean that you should do it. You probably know what you can take and if you feel confident that you can handle a mature game then that´s on you! There´s a good chance that you can get away with that, even if it´s against the rules. Just be certain that you can handle the consequences of your actions, for example being unable to sleep because of nightmares or constantly stressed because out of fear of getting caught. Perhaps it´s smarter to play by the rules...
Can you prevent kids from playing mature games?
Actually you can, for example on the Xbox One there are settings where you can make a profile for a child and with that he or she can´t play mature games. This means your kid can play games and you don´t constantly have to check if he or she is playing games he or she shouldn´t be playing. If you worry that your kid might use your own account (if you have one) then you can always put a password on your account, this way they can´t use it without first entering the password. Of course you can also talk with your kid and tell them why they can´t play certain games. These actions won´t make you the most popular parent but I doubt you become a parent for that, it´s more important that your kids are safe and don´t play games they shouldn´t play!
