Face your fears!
I think games aren´t just made for fun, sometimes you can confront your fears. This might seem strange but in a way it can actually help you. By playing a survival horror game you might be able to take more or it can scar you for life, let´s not forget the part where games can also make things worse. But I do think that some games can actually help you with certain things, eventhough it´s not real it´s sometimes very real for the person playing a game. Especially if the screen flashes, the music becomes more intense and your controller vibrates when you get hit. It´s not a perfect simulation but it can put you in an uncomfortable situation, which will often require you to deal with it if you want to move forward.
Also people with a certain phobia can use games to face their fears, a fear of spiders for example can be bad. But if you play certain games where you have to fight giant spiders can actually help a bit. But also taking a spider as a pet, which hopefully will show you that spiders aren´t monsters. But it´s tricky, one person can react quite calm and good on something while another can completely freak out. People are different and one person doesn´t speak for all the others. It´s really more of a let´s see how someone reacts and then make a decision if this is a good idea. Of course sometimes a bit of motivation is needed to get someone started, because nobody likes to face their fears when they don´t feel like it. Especially when someone feels like he or she is perfectly fine this way.
But what if your fears keep you from living a normal life? Then games can actually make a difference, once again I´m not saying that this is a guarantee or that it will actually do something good. But I do think that it´s a good thing to try, to confront your fears and fight against them. Because you don´t want to be controlled by fear, it makes you miserable and keeps you from living your life free of such worries.
Of course I´m not just talking about survival horror games, sometimes a simple game like the Sims can be enough. For example people that are afraid to leave their house can play the Sims 3 to step outside their virtual house and meet other people, of course it´s not real but it might actually help them find the courage and motivation to do it in real life. A positive response in a game can definately help in real life, so why wouldn´t you want to give it a try?
