Dlc that we want or dlc that earns money for developers?
Every time a game announces new dlc it´s the question if this is dlc made for what people want or what developers think is going to earn them a lot of money. Maybe that´s a bit unfair to say, because I know that some developers actually do listen to the community and try to give people what they want. But when you play a game like CoD then I can´t help but wonder if the new maps are made for a quick cash grab or actually designed for people to test their skills or what they´ve been asking for.
In a first person shooter dlc is very important, it keeps the game longer alive and with some luck it also attracts new players to the game. That´s what you at hope for as a developer, but what about us the gamers? What do we want? I guess that really depends on who you ask, because we might all be gamers but we don´t always like the same things. Some people are really focused on winning, others just want to have a good time and then there are people that just want to explore and discover new things. We all have our own reason to play a game, so it´s not always easy for developers to keep everyone happy.
You don´t often hear people being excited about new dlc, but I think that´s something more of the last couple of years, because I remember a time where people were happy to see new dlc for a game! Sometimes dlc is absolutely amazing, just look at the Shadow Broker dlc in Mass Effect 2. People wanted to have Liara in their team and you could also romance her in that dlc. You also get an awesome story with some cool action moments that are absolutely fantastic. I don´t think anyone complained about that. But then you look at CoD Ghosts and people do nothing else but complain. For example people complain that they´re using an old map and then put a new coat of paint on it, guess what they´ve been doing that in game for quite some time so complaining doesn´t really help! Then there are complaints about how the maps are always similar, well I guess you could try something completely different but sometimes it´s smarter to play it safe than to introduce something completely different from the rest of the game. As much people that might hate CoD Ghosts dlc there are still plenty of people that seem to like it, especially when you look at the amount of people that have that dlc.
But what about those micro dlc offers? I guess this is something extra, it´s maybe not what we really want but nobody forces you to buy it. Which is also something that counts for other dlc, you´re free to buy what you want and if you´re not interested then don´t buy it! Dlc might not always be what you hope it to be, but if it brings new life to a game then that´s hardly ever a bad thing in my book!
