Four player co-op, do we really need it?

As a lone wolf I don´t really see the need for this, because most story modes I play solo. I think most games with a story mode are made for just one player, this works well for me and I don´t see why developers should change that to a co-op mode. Of course it´s nice if you can share the story with a friend, but usually a game isn´t designed for that and your friend usually doesn´t show up in the cutscenes. The worst type of co-op game is where you and your friend look almost the same but he or she has a different colour on his or her character. It feels kind of cheap to me and doesn´t help me focus on the story.

It´s nice that you can play in the story mode with a friend, this way you can share your adventures with eachother and hopefully have a great time. But for me this was often problematic, because my friends wouldn´t always be online when I was online and if I continued with the story then we couldn´t play together anymore. Of course this is just a minor setback but in truth it does make a difference to me, because as much as I have fun playing with friends there are moments where I just want to play a game by myself.

Most games don´t force you to play with others, it´s an option that you can choose to do or not. But when there are achievements/trophies tied to co-op play then it´s not a big suprise that people want to get that. Personally I hate games that have co-op achievements, because it almost forces me to play with others if I want to score at least 500 gamerscore in a game. Somehow a lot of achievements/trophies are often tied to that co-op nonsense. I think developers should just stop making those type of achievements/trophies and just make it an option in the game but it has no effect on the story nor any significance to the achievements/trophies!

So do you really need a (four player) co-op? No I don´t think so, especially in games that are perfectly fine playing by yourself. I don´t play the Halo campaign with others, I enjoy playing this all by myself! But I must admit that in a game like Fuse, Fable 3 or Gears of War 3 it´s nice to have friends with you. It makes those games a bit more fun to play, but once again I don´t need friends to enjoy those games more. I think I´ve spend quite a lot of solo hours in those games and that probably says a lot about the need for a co-op. It´s fun to play with others but don´t force this on people, especially not with subtle ways of putting achievements/trophies in a game that are tied to that!
