When you shouldn't play a game
Shouldn't play a game? Yes, that's right when you shouldn't play a game. It seems weird but sometimes it's better not to play a game, especially when there is a pretty good reason why you shouldn't play a game. I'm not saying we all have the same reasons but it usually does come down to the same things, which is either frustration or getting bored with a game.
Frustration is a game killer?
It is to me, when a game frustrates me then I'm not going to have a good time playing this game. No matter how much time I spend in this game it will usually only go from bad to worse. Which is why I stop playing games that frustrate me, because frustration isn't fun and when I'm not having fun I don't want to play that game anymore. Sure there are moments when games can be lame, but I'm not talking about just a moment but a long line of things that annoy or frustrate you. For example I decided to play Destiny today, I check Xûr for some new stuff and then play the daily mission. Actually pretty standard stuff for a veteran Destiny player, but when I'm playing the daily mission and I'm almost at the end I get disconnected and I'm back at the title menu. This is annoying, especially since this has been happening since day 1. I decide to press A and try again, I'm already annoyed but you try to make the most of it, but somehow I can't get back into the game. After several attempts I take out the disc and put it back in the box, this is where it will stay now for at least a week. No need to get mad and there's no need to break the game in half, it's better that you stop playing and play another game or do something else.
Why play a game that you find boring?
Well one reason is because your friends are playing it, I know that from some multiplayer games I played eventhough I had no fun playing them anymore. Sometimes you stay in a game for a friend, to help them out or to hang out in some 'friendly' deathmatch to shoot the shit out of eachother. The main reason why I would advice you not to do this is that games that you find boring will make it almost impossible for you to enjoy these games again in the future. For example Dragon Age Inquisition is my favourite game of 2014, but I played it for six weeks without a break and that was too much. I'm kind of bored with it now and so I take a long break, I don't do this because I really want to but because it's better to leave certain games alone for some time and then I start playing Dragon Age again once it's quite some time since I last played it so I can enjoy it once more. Too much of something is bad, wether that's a single player or multiplayer game.
But what if I really want to play a game?
Well that's up to you, I'm not going to tell you what you need to do. I'm just giving you advice, you can do with that whatever you want. I don't play games that frustrate me because I get mad when I continue playing these games, which will then result in me being an asshole towards those around me and make me most likely want to destroy half my house in an anger outburst. But then again that's my reaction towards frustration. With games that I find boring it's more about protecting a game, keeping it special by not playing the shit out of it. If you play a game non stop for more than four weeks then you're already taking a risk, it's smarter to switch it up a bit because that keeps games a bit more interesting and it just might make the game playable in the future. Team Fortress 2 is a good example for me, I play that game every now and then just for fun. Not too much but just a bit of fun for me every now and then. Games are meant to be fun, when you get bored or frustrated because of a game then that's a good reason to stop playing that game!
