Looking back at.....the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion!
This game is the first game I bought for my Xbox 360, I heard good things about it and the description on the box kind of convinced me to give it a try. Which was a smart move because I really enjoyed playing Oblivion! The freedom, the choices, the classes and skills in this game plus memorable characters that made the game fun to play. It's no surprise that I got all achievements in this game and I still kept playing it, something that is quite rare these days!
Freedom!
No not Braveheart style, it's what you get the moment you escape the sewers after the tutorial. In the tutorial you decide your race, class and your sign. You already begin to make progress with some skills but it's really when you're out of the sewers that you see a big open world and you can go where you want to go. Sure you can follow the quest but you can also go your own way, the main quest doesn't suffer under that and nothing is timed. So if you want to learn how to be a mage then you can do that, you can also join a group of thieves and/or assassins. If you feel like testing your powers then you can join the fighters guild which is located in most of the big cities on the map. But you can also just explore and do your own thing, discover new areas and find hidden treasures.
I'm learning while playing?
That's right! If you sneak you learn to sneak better and if you sneak enough you improve your sneaking which then adds up to leveling up, if you improve enough skills you will level up. It's an unsual but effective trick. So not only does this mean you can improve your skill or learn new skills, you also reach a higher level with then makes you more powerful and makes future quests easier. But you should know that certain things don't work well together, for example sneaking in heavy armor isn't a good combination eventhough you can make it lighter for you (a skill you can learn) and that it makes less noise when you move while sneaking (another skill you can learn).
Good or bad?
You don't have to be the hero, you can be a bad person and do some sinister things. As an assassin you can murder your way to the top. If you like subtle crime then you can try your luck as a thief, which can be quite rewarding for you! Sometimes you make mistakes, for example you hit an ally in a battle and he or she can take offense and starts attacking you. Killing this person is a crime, which means accidental kills are still a crime. Something I learned the hard way in this game. It's why you might not want to join a battle with your melee weapon when there are a lot of allies around, unless you can kill with one hit. In the end it's all up to you, something that became even more fun in Skyrim and also the Elder Scrolls Online you'll have a choice to be good or bad. But I'll never forget my first experiences on my Xbox 360 in Oblivion, good times!
