Graphics matter?
I'm actually surprised by the amount of people that call a game shit just because the graphics are less than top quality. Maybe that's the spoiled new generation or just a bunch of douchebags that need to find something to whine about but honestly who the fuck cares about graphics when the gameplay and story are awesome!
Do graphics really matter?
That depends who you ask and what type of game it is, because in some games graphics are just a luxury while in others it's a necessary to actually see what's going on or to spot important items. But I think games like Borderlands and the Walking Dead have proved that games don't need to have fancy graphics to be amazing. One of my favourites, the wolf among us, is also a game without fancy graphics and yet it's amazing! I remember seeing Final Fantasy VIII for the first time and loved the intro and thought that those were the best graphics ever, of course that wasn't true but in the moment things sometimes look better then they really are. It wasn't the graphics that kept me in Fable, eventhough the game looked pretty for that time, but it's the funny gameplay and story that kept me going. The same counts when you play most games, you hardly ever truly notice the environment because you're often concentrating on other things like a mission/quest or enemies attacking you. Then there is no time to be enjoying the graphics. But that doesn't mean that it's not appreciated, for example in Skyrim I would stand still in the middle of nowhere and just enjoy my surroundings. But I seriously doubt that fancy graphics are very important, they're a luxury in games and you don't really need it to be able to play or enjoy playing the game!
Old generation gamers appreciate games more?
Who are you calling old?!!! But to answer the question, yes I think gamers from the Mario and Sonic times are probably appreciating games a bit more. When you played those games then you know how games used to look like, so looking at games these days it's all better now. Of course there are still some games that look horrible, but that's not the majority and I'm pretty certain that you can spot these games from a mile away. People that whine so much about the graphics probably have never played the games before their day of birth, some of them are probably spoiled with the fancy graphics and expect this in every game eventhough that's not always compatible with gameplay. Because some people forget that being in a big open game world with fancy graphics might affect the gameplay. Which means you either get fancy graphics and shitty gameplay or less quality graphics and good gameplay, I don't know about you but I know what I prefer! Maybe it's also a bit about growing up, perhaps immature players want fancy graphics and mature gamers prefer a nice story with good gameplay. It's difficult to say, one person likes this and the other likes that. There's nothing wrong with wanting better graphics, but to call a game bad just because the graphics are of a lower quality then some other games that's just dumb!
