Sinful Sunday: Games allow you to misbehave?
Whenever I play a multiplayer game there are (almost) always people that misbehave, which can be a bit of trolling up to the part where you´ll meet people that try to make your gaming experience miserable. That´s annoying (to say the least) and unfortunately there isn´t much you can do about that, but why do people do these things?
The most logic answer is because they can, no one will be able to do something about it and the anonymous online world allows you to get away with it as well. So maybe a more interesting question would be, why wouldn´t you misbehave online? Because some people aren´t looking for trouble or don´t want to be bothered with such things. This might be a surprise to some people but there are actually gamers that just want to have fun playing a game, shocking isn´t it? Not the type of fun that comes at the expense of others, no just fun playing a game and perhaps getting some achievements/trophies while they play a game.
But even the most noble of us all could turn into a real scumbag online, once again just because you can and for some people this is something to escape their boring life. Why they choose to annoy others instead of playing the game is something you´d have to ask one of the people that likes to do that, because I prefer to just play a game and do my own thing without clashing with other players. Even when I play (competitive) online multiplayer I just want to get an achievement or just try something else, I´m not looking for people to annoy or to make their lives miserable. Maybe that happens when I beat them but that´s part of the game!
So as long as it´s part of the game it´s ok to annoy others? That depends, I mean it´s easy to say that annoying others is part of the game but let´s just say that it´s not my intention. When I play an online multiplayer game then I´m not looking for trouble or people to annoy, it´s not my motivation to play online multiplayer and definitely not my goal to annoy others. You could use it as a strategy to distract or break someone concentration in some games, but to do that to strangers just seems weird to me. I guess we all have our own reasons to behave in a certain way but I would really appreciate it if people would just try to behave instead of misbehave, because if the roles would be reversed then I doubt that someone would like that. Games are meant to be fun, but not at the expense of others!
