Can you trust someone that reviews games?

As a kid I often bought game magazines to check the latest games (this was before I discovered internet and had internet for myself) and I was often influenced by the reviews because when they said a game was great then I wanted to see for myself. At the same time that also meant that I didn´t play games because they got a bad review, I guess as a kid you´re easier influenced and the opinions of others matter more to you. But when you get a bit older and make your own decisions you realize that you don´t have to follow someone elses opinion, you can make your own opinion and decide for yourself if you want to buy a game or not. I´m not saying that I don´t value someone elses opinion but I won´t follow someone blindly in their opinion, because I prefer to make my own decisions in life! Besides what one person likes the other might hate and vice versa.

Do reviews still matter? I think they still matter, it´s especially useful for people that still have doubts about buying a game. Hopefully a review will then give you the chance to make up your mind if you want to buy a game or not. Just make certain that this isn´t some twat that just talks bollocks but actually someone that played the game and can tell you what´s good about it and what´s not. I doubt people are interested in reading how people tell a lot of personal crap instead of talking about the game. This seems unlikely for you? Well there is this Dutch game magazine that has a bunch of assholes that put about 50% of their personal lives in their magazine and then decide to talk about the game which is then also strongly influenced with personal feelings about it. How they call themselves a professional game magazine and get away with it is beyond me, but then again I´m not a journalist.

So there is definitely a difference in quality when it comes to certain game reviewers? Absolutely, some are actually pretty good and give fair scores while others are just a bunch of idiots that have no idea what they´re talking about or what they´re doing! It doesn´t take an expert to figure it out, but I do think it´s also about what helps you. If someone is giving you helpful advice and reviews you agree with then that´s good for you, just remember that not everyone feels the same way so it shouldn´t surprise you that some people have a different opinion than you. Usually this leads to some stupid arguments in a comment section, a place that seems to be filled with enough stupidity to make the world explode.

What should a reviewer do? In simple words I´d say play games and give an honest opinon about that game. It seems simple but it´s not always that simple, especially when you have to get a review for a game in just a couple of days. Games with a lot of things to do in it, for example Dragon Age Inquisition, are difficult (if not impossible) to review in just a couple of days. This rushes someone and you can´t get a good objective review out of that, the deadline will force you to play faster and makes every tiny bit that slows you down look like a negative point and it will most likely influence you. Which is why sometimes certain games get a bad review while gamers actually enjoy playing it. So instead of rushing reviewers they should get a decent amount of time to check a game and get familiar with it, this way they can give people an honest review and that is as little influenced by anything else.

But can you trust someone that reviews games? Maybe not always, but I think you can definitely take a look at his or her review and add that to your own arguments if you want to buy a game or not. Because in the end it´s up to you if you want to buy a game or not. So if you think the review holds value to you then you can let that count and if you think that the review doesn´t hold any value to you then you can ignore it. It´s really up to you when it comes to buying games, if you think a game is fun to play then check it out. Try to get informed with more than just a review. For example check gameplay videos on youtube, find as much information about the game on the website (if possible) of the game and if there is a demo then be certain to play that first before you buy the game. Hopefully this helps you with figuring out which games you want to buy, because it´s not always easy when there are a lot of interesting games out there and you don´t have enough money to buy them all.
