Looking back at.....Super Mario Bros!
For a lot of people from my generation this is probably one of the first games they played on a console, eventhough some people played on a Sega console and probably first played a Sonic game, and first introduced you to Mario. It´s not his first appearance, but I think it´s the first time he was called Mario and it didn´t involve fighting a gorilla! But you once again you had to save a damsel in distress, it´s the special ability of Peach to always get kidnapped in almost every Mario game (kart, fighting and sport games not included).
I actually played this game first when I was nine, a friend of mine had this game and I kept trying to beat levels and his time on those levels. Not easy when you don´t have the game nor console yourself! You see my first game for the NES was Super Mario Bros. 2 and that was almost a year later. So yeah I had to deal with my inexperience and do whatever I could to win, with some succes because the game is fun enough to keep trying. Eventhough it´s frustrating if you have to start over from the start when you´re out of lives, but that kind of keeps you on your toes and usually helps you focus more on the game instead of just being silly.
Later I discovered warp levels, it saves you some time and it makes the game a bit easier. Of course this isn´t completely fair and yes I did beat the game fair and square! Still it´s fun to just play these platforming levels, it was a great game for me to get good at that and it´s something I still benefit from when I need to do some platforming. What better way to get better at games than to throw in an old Mario game and go back to the basics, if you can do that then the rest is just some fancy stuff with the same idea! Hah if only... But I do think that my Mario past helped me become a better gamer, the things I learned and also the skills I gained from that do help in games I play today. Just not so much as they used to because I don´t play a lot of 2D side scrolling platform games anymore...
Is this the best Mario game? Oh no I wouldn´t say that, maybe to some this is but I think there are other games that are a lot more fun and not just because you can play with your friends in those games. I´m not talking about a 2 player game where you take turns, no it´s even more fun if you can play both (or even in some of the later games with up to four players) at the same time on the screen. That causes a lot of chaos and it´s a lot of fun! That doesn´t make Super Mario Bros. a bad game, it makes it a classic that you should really check out if you haven´t done that already!
