The Evil Within is a bloody nightmare!
Recently I talked about how survival horror games are slowly starting to become scary again, after playing the Evil Within I´m pretty certain that this is true! What starts as another day on the job as a cop turns out to become a nightmare for Sebastian Castellanos! From the classic serial killer scene where he chases you with a chainsaw to horrible traps that you could find in a Saw movie and disturbing stuff you´d only find in Silent Hill. This is the Evil Within!
What´s so scary about this game? I´d say the realism of it, not that everything is so believable but you´re not Chris Redfield that can shoot or punch his way out of trouble, you´ll have to be smart and find ways around problems and be clever to overcome an obstacle instead of trying to punch a giant boulder into lava. This kind of shows you the big difference between Resident Evil and the Evil Within, both are survival horror games but they take different paths. The Evil Within wants you to think before you act, as Resident Evil just wants you to kill the monsters to make it further. Which is nice sometimes but this change into gameplay is actually quite interesting. But it also makes you quite vulnerable, you don´t have a lot of ammo and monsters don´t stay dead if you don´t burn them (just like the Resident Evil remake) which means you have to be more careful or you´re dead!
Isn´t that frustrating? Sometimes it can be frustrating if an enemy can kill you with one move, it sucks that you can´t do much about that but it also pushes you to do better! Do you want to be beaten by a mindless corpse or are you going to beat that thing?!!! But enemies aren´t that stupid, the guy with the chainsaw was following the blood trail I left behind when he wounded me, but then again he fails to check the locker so it´s not that they´re super smart. I guess that would make it too difficult, but you´ll need a bit of an advantage or else you´ll never make it! This constant struggle to survive can be tiresome but there are checkpoints and also chapters where you can save and take a break which is nice. But there are definitely moments in the game that are frustrating because you constantly fail or things just don´t go the way you want them to. I would advice you to save always twice, so in case you messed up (wasted a lot of ammo or health) in one chapter and saved anyway then you can always go back and try to do better. It´s better than to reach a point where you´re stuck because you don´t have enough ammo or health to make it further.
Of course a survival horror game like the Evil Within should be played in the dark (if possible you should also put headphones on to make it more intense) and without anyone else in the room. Do you think you can handle that? Of course you can! You´re tough, you´re smart and you have to face all the horror alone without any real means to defend yourself...good luck!
