Looking back at.....The Darkness!
It´s strange but this game is not really a survival horror game and yet for me it does fit in the same group more or less. Why? Because you have these tentacle monsters that help you devour your enemies (or at least their hearts) and do some creepy stuff to intimidate your enemies. But it´s not your typical survival horror game, so I guess it doesn´t really belong in that genre. Still it´s a fantastic game!
You play as Jackie Estacado, not really a bad guy but working for bad guys. When one day they try to eliminate him he gets a visit from a strange being calling himself the Darkness, this being gives Jackie amazing powers and allows him to escape. Unfortunately he can´t save his girlfriend and when she´s killed by the same guys that tried to kill him he wants revenge and you´ll get it one way or another!
Your powers are amazing, not just to rip out hearts but also to control minions and use special powers to destroy enemies with. Of course you also have a lot of guns to shoot the shit out of your enemies, so you don´t have to worry about that! In a way that makes this a first person shooter but I think you´ll do the game injustice by calling it just that! The story is fantastic and the soundtrack brings some real emotion into the game, even when you´re a cold hearted son of a bitch you´ll feel something when you listen to the soundtrack. Not just the emotional waterworks but also some kick ass themes that will want you to kill all those that wronged you in this game! From haunting sad themes in the subway to rock hard tunes when you´re in a fight, there is hardly ever a dull moment in this game!
There is also a sequel but that one isn´t as good as the first game, still it´s fun to play and definitely worth checking out. But the first game will always be one of my favourites, it´s amazing in almost every way and a complete surprise because I didn´t expect that from this game. Which is a good thing, I like a pleasant surprise and with games that is definitely a nice bonus. It´s not a scary game, but there might be a couple of disturbing moments, so maybe it´s not for everyone but if you think you can handle it then I would definitely recommend you play this game.
