When a game is no longer popular
Sooner or later this will happen to most games, the popularity of the game will disappear and so will the people that play this game as they move on to other games. I guess you might keep a handful of loyal fans but sooner or later you´ll have to move on because if it´s an online multiplayer game the servers will shut down eventually. An offline single player game might have a better chance to survive time but then again how many times can you play the same game over and over again?
What´s shocking is how some games lost their popularity quite fast, for example Titanfall was super popular in the first month but then three months after launch it was almost completely abandoned on some consoles. Which is a shame because it´s a good game, but somehow people couldn´t enjoy it for that long as most people would move on after a month or two. I guess being able to level up that quickly does have a disadvantage, people reach max rank and then quickly get bored with the game. For me it went even quicker, I reach prestige level 2 and just lost complete interest in playing anymore because multiplayer was just more of the same and the dlc didn´t change that in my opinion. Sure you get new stuff but seriously ten Euros for three maps? No thanks, that´s not worth it and probably one of the reasons why several people also left the Titanfall train.
So what does this mean for Destiny and CoD Advanced Warfare? Destiny is actually doing pretty good now, a lot of people play it daily and CoD Advanced Warfare might disrupt that a bit but I think there are still a lot of people that will play Destiny, especially since the first dlc will be available in December. CoD Advanced Warfare will be quite interesting, the developers turned CoD into something fast and exciting and a lot of people have high expectations. That usually means disappointment because a lot of gamers are spoiled little shits (not all of them, just a lot of whiners and negative assholes that like to talk shit about games), but hopefully CoD Advanced Warfar will keep people happy for quite some time. It remains to be seen how well the game will work but with some luck it will be a lot of fun to play!
But what about single player games? I think games like Dragon Age Inquisition have a good chance to keep people busy for quite some time, if that´s not your thing then you can also go for the Master Chief collection (for the Xbox gamers) and delve into the single player for a lot of hours or spend more time in multiplayer. Of course Assassin´s Creed is there for some single player fun, that usually keeps me busy for some time to get as much out of the game as I can. Sunset Overdrive is fun, I don´t know how long that can entertain you but it should be better with friends and keep the fun alive longer!
All games have a beginning and an end, it´s sad but this is the way it is. You can´t really change that and I know that I felt sad saying goodbye to some old games myself, but that doesn´t mean you have to throw them away! You can keep the games and the console you need to play them on and have yourself a retro weekend where you play some of the older games every now and then. It´s actually a lot of fun and if you invite some friends then you´re in for a lot of fun and shouting when you´re playing those old splitscreen or shared screen games. Popularity might be important for games to survive, but at least you can keep games alive as well because as long as you´re having fun playing them they can never truly die. As long as they´re not online multiplayer games...
