Balance in first person shooters, is it possible?

It never takes long for people to complain in first person shooters about balance in competitive multiplayer. Some guns are overpowered, other guns are too weak and then there are guns that are just right but get nerfed anyway. Enough fuel to make people mad and massively assault the developers, but is it actually possible to bring balance to a first person shooter?

I don´t think you can bring balance to competitive multiplayer in a first person shooter, because there will always be a gun that´s slightly better than the others and if that gun is nerfed then another gun will that place of being the best. So that means the developers shouldn´t do anything about it? I´m not saying that, because when a gun is clearly overpowered then it´s not fair towards anyone else that doesn´t have that gun or can´t use that gun for whatever reason that might be. You want to keep things fair and as close to being balanced as possible. Because no matter how good your skills are, if someone with an overpowered gun comes in a match then that can change everything!

People are sensitive about guns getting nerfed? This isn´t really a secret, death threats have been made towards developers by some idiots because their favourite gun got nerfed. It´s easy to say that these are kids being stupid but I think that sometimes adults can be just as emotional when it comes to this subject, because when you´re having fun with a gun that gets you a lot of kills and then suddenly the developers mess that up then I can understand that you´re not happy about that. But that doesn´t mean it´s ok to threaten people!

Does it really matter? To me it doesn´t really matter, it´s just a game and as much as I want to win I´m not going to make a big deal out of it. I just want to have fun and hopefully unlock some nice achievements or some cool stuff in the game while having fun. That´s my idea of having a great time in games, often this fun is combined with succes in games and in competitive multiplayer that often means that your succes comes at the cost of someone else. That sucks but that´s why it´s competitive multiplayer! Having an awesome gun can make the difference, but don´t forget that you have to do your best as well. You could see it as a challenge when your favourite gun is nerfed, can you still get that many kill with it? Otherwise you could try some other guns, in most first person shooters there are often a lot of guns and yet most people only stick to a select number of guns. Try something new, discover new strategies and learn to kick ass with something no one else is using!
