Shops in games are unfair!
As much as you want to complain about shops and a bad economy things are hardly as bad as in games, because shops usually ask a small fortune for items and if you try to sell something (sometimes an item you just bought there) they only give a handful of money for it. Ridiculous! But why do developers make these shops so unfair?
If you would get everything at a cheap price and get everything you always wanted then that would make the game ten times easier, it would also mean that you´d probably beat the game in a day and that wouldn´t really keep the game alive for a long time. Things need to be hard, items need to be earned and you can´t just give them away. It´s all part of the experience, like it or not that´s just the way it is!
Sometimes people try to be clever, they steal or even kill the shopkeeper just trying to get stuff for free. Unfortunately this hardly ever works because all the items usually disappear once the shopkeeper is dead, apparently the developers realized that greed turns people into scumbags and it´s better to prepare yourself for that. Stealing might work better but it often leaves you with a bounty on your head and that kind of makes it more difficult to move freely in the world, eventually you might have to bribe guards and that also costs money. Maybe you just should´ve been honest, at least that seems to be the best solution.
So crime doesn´t pay? Well the Elder Scrolls games (for example Oblivion and Skyrim) offer a nice career for thieves, even for assassins if you´re in for that, so you can become quite wealthy being bad! But there are several other ways of earning money and that doesn´t require you to do things you don´t want to do, which means you can earn money by doing quests or just exploring. But it´s fun to be evil in games, it´s like doing something that is wrong and getting away with it!
But if you would start a shop in a game would that make you rich? There aren´t a lot of games that allow you to do that and usually it does mean that you´ll have to invest or buy the shop first, so at that point you really have to ask yourself if you want to spend you money on that or just buy new gear. In Fable it´s a good investment though, because you´ll earn money over time and that means more money in the future!
Shops might not always be fair but they keep the game alive, because if you could get whatever you want just like that then there wouldn´t be much worth fighting for. Oh that nice shiny shield? Yeah I already bought that for a dime in the local store, no need to go on a quest so I can afford that.
