Sinful Sunday: Frustration leads to anger?
I guess it´s not a big surprise, when you´re frustrated you´ll get angry (maybe not everyone responds this way but at least it doesn´t make you happy) and this leads to an unpleasant gaming experience. So why do so many developers make games frustrating?
The problem is often that people these days complain about almost everything, it´s too easy or the graphics look like crap and then there is always a need to just hate a game to annoy others. People are impossible to please these days, well maybe some aren´t being scumbags but a lot of people complain about almost everything. Eventhough we live in a time where things are pretty good, well when it comes to technology at least. We can play games in our house, play with our friends eventhough they´re on the other side of the world and we can communicate from almost any location. But it´s never enough, good has to be better and when something is better a lot of people expect the best. For developers it´s not easy to please people, because people will always complain.
Making games frustrating is the revenge of developers? Hah that´s a good one! No that´s not the reason, often developers make games a bit more challenging to make certain people don´t finish it in a day or two and eventhough they do finish it that there are enough challenges to keep you busy for some time. Since developers can´t shit out games every week you´ll have to do with a certain game for some months if not years, so that means that a game can´t be too easy or you´ll be done with that within a week. That´s not just a waste of money but it also means that you´ll be bored because now you have nothing left to do in a game.
So difficult games are more fun? Not exactly, eventhough some people do think it´s more fun when a game is difficult. Dark Souls has a group of fans that love the difficulty and there are people that hate this game with a passion! Difficulty or sometimes glitches or other problems you encounter in games makes you frustrated, which then can easily lead to anger. It´s an unpleasant experience you don´t want to encounter but it´s something that´s difficult to avoid, especially when you play competitive multiplayer. Just think about an achievement/trophy you just can´t get or that you die just before the checkpoint and you can´t make it no matter what you try.
I think it´s a smart idea to know your limits, don´t play on a difficulty you can´t handle (at least at that time) and avoid game modes you don´t like because frustration won´t make the game more fun! Anger is unpleasant, not just for you but also people around you and those that have to hear you rant in the microphone. You can hate developers for making a game frustrating or you could take a break and then try again later, remember too much of something is never a good thing even if the game is so much fun to play!
