Pre-order bonus makes it worth to pre-order?

A lot of popular games have a pre-order option with often a pre-order bonus attached to that, this is a way to convince people to pre-order that game or else they´re going to miss out on a cool items or something special in the game itself. But is it really worth it?

A pre-order bonus is nothing special? That depends, sometimes it is something unique and the only way people can get it is via pre-order. Of course there are ways of getting it, sometimes people sell codes that give you acces to a pre-order bonus, but that´s usually a bit more expensive then you´d like and then you really have to wonder if that´s worth it! Sometimes the pre-order bonus is for sale in the game store (online) and there are even items that become available to everyone after a certain amount of time. So a pre-order bonus isn´t always that special!

But I´d be too harsh to say it´s all crap, because it´s not! For example playing as Catwoman in Batman Arkham City was a nice pre-order bonus, eventhough that became available to other people (for a price) as well who bought the game later. The same can be said about the stone prisoner dlc in Dragon Age: Origins, fantastic pre-order bonus but it also became available to other people for a price. Which is good of course that everyone can enjoy that, but it kind of makes you wonder why you´d make that the pre-order bonus. If you really want to lure people in then it has to be something that is unique and the only way you can get that item then you´ll have to pre-order the game. Which is lame for everyone that can´t do that, but it´s nice when you pre-order a game that you get something only a few players have. That makes it a bit more special, assuming that it´s something cool. But let´s not forget that often a lot of people pre-order a game, so unique is only unique on a large scale.

Why bother to pre-order a game? Well the pre-order bonus is often the main reason, but sometimes people just want to make certain that they get the game on the day of release. Which means the earlier you pre-order it the bigger the chance is that you´ll get it. But that doesn´t have to be a problem, a lot of stores have a lot of games in storage and with a lot of popularity for a game a lot of games will be available. But it´s better to be safe than sorry, the last thing you want is to be the one guy that didn´t pre-order the game and now has to wait a couple of days to play that new cool game. Of course there is nothing wrong with that, but I prefer to play the game I like as soon as possible!
