A bad ending ruins the game?
No matter how much fun a game is, when the ending leaves you with disappointment or even anger then that is enough to ruin the entire game. It´s the worst when you´ve played several games that all lead to an ending that is just not what you expected nor wanted, but there is nothing you can do about that...or is there?
I think a lot of people have heard about Mass Effect, probably the same amount of people have heard about the ending in Mass Effect 3. But if you haven´t then I won´t spoil anything, let´s just say that no matter what choice you make the ending is pretty much the same. Yes I finished the game three times just to be certain! Oh there are some differences but in the original ending that was not really visible, so Bioware made this extended ending that gave the people a bit more details to the effect of your choice at the end of the game. If gamers never spoke about the ending, as in telling others how upset they were (some still are) with the ending, then things would´ve probably stayed the same. So gamers can definately have an influence on a game, but don´t think that developers will always change or add something to an ending. But when there is a big group of fans then it´s difficult to ignore them and so you can get things done!
It´s especially with games that give you a choice that there is a chance that you pick an ending you´re not happy with, which means you either have to play the game again (especially when you don´t have a checkpoint or save just before the ending) and then choose another option. It´s rough but I know that some people would go that far and I´ve played games where I went that far. For example I played Silent Hill several times just to get all endings, eventhough I was already happy with my first and second ending. Maybe it´s curiosity or perhaps it´s some type of perfection where you need to have all endings.
But does a bad ending ruin a game? I think it does because no matter how much fun you had during the game itself, when the endings sucks then that is what stays with you. It´s weird but that´s how it works for me and I bet I´m not the only one. Of course it´s not a good idea to know before you choose what the effect of your choice will be and what the ending will be like, then there is no point in playing! But I do think that more games need a better save system so you don´t have to replay the entire game just because you made a bad choice at the end of the game or maybe even before that. There are also games that just have a bad ending (when there is no choice at all and the ending is just the ending), then it´s pretty simple and I´d say stay away from those games because they´re not worth your time!
