Sinful Sunday: I don't like good endings
This probably sounds weird but I must admit that I'm not a big fan of happy endings, oh sure in some games or movies it fits but sometimes I'm secretly rooting for the villain. Especially when the villain is more interesting than the hero or when the hero is such an annoying douchebag that you just want to see the villain succeed. But does that make me weird? Maybe...
Villains are more popular now?
I think so, I mean just look at Loki who has a large group of desperate fans that love him and maybe it also helps that the actor (Tom Hiddleston) who plays as Loki in the movies is a man with good looks. But looks don't always make a villain popular, sometimes it's also the personality or just the matter of how cruel and effective a villain is. Just look at Freddy Krueger that scares the shit out of a lot of people and yet a lot of people love this character. Games and movies have picked this up and so you get movies that put the concentration on the villain instead of the hero. A good example is the animated movie Mastermind where the villain kills the hero and then you see what kind of effect that has on the villain. But also live action movies like Malificent show how a good person can turn into a villain and what kind of effect that has on the world around the villain, but I must admit that the villain wasn't a true villain in that movie. Then you get movies about villain teams like Suicide Squad and probably later also the Sinister Six. I guess there's not denying it, villains are hot!
What makes villains so interesting?
Maybe it's the forbidden lure of being a villain, I mean in real life you probably wouldn't want to hurt others but in your imagination it would be cool if you could do certain things you normally wouldn't do. Wether that's because you secretly want to rule the world, just get filthy rich or perhaps want the respect of everyone around you. One villain isn't exactly like the other and they often have their own reasons of doing what they do. It's also fun to see some villains play with the hero, making them look like an idiot or toying with them up to the point where it drives the hero crazy. It seems like villains have more freedom in their role, they can go crazy and yet nobody would seem surprised by that because villains can be quite unpredictable (eventhough some are very predictable). It also doesn't hurt that villains sometimes get a hot sidekick, just look at Harley Quinn.
So no more happy endings?
I don't think that will happen, I mean people still like happy endings and I like that as well. At least in a good movie and when it fits with the movie. When the world is in ruin then you don't want to see smiling faces at the end just because they're alive, but then again someone could sell that as people never give up and there is always hope. Personally I'm not a big fan of these type of messages, I don't watch movies to learn lessons in life. But it's nice when a movie leaves you with a good feeling, which doesn't always mean that it's a happy ending. Maybe the villain survives and you're happy that he or she is still around so you can expect a sequel and that's sometimes great news. Then again sometimes it's good when something is finished, the hero lives and the villain is dead. All things come to an end and it doesn't always have to be bad. It's nice to be surprised though, I mean unexpected endings in movies sometimes lead to some of the best movies. You don't want to be able to guess the ending of the movie in the first ten minutes, that sucks!
