Looking back at.....Super Mario Bros. 2!
This was the first game I owned, I got it with the NES on my tenth birthday and at that moment that was like the best thing ever! Finally I could play games at my own house and play as much as I wanted. Of course I wouldn't sit all day behind the tv but I did spend quite some time playing games from that moment on. But what makes Super Mario Bros. 2 so much fun? Well it's diverse and offers you several levels that you need to beat, when you're ten years old then that can be a challenge! But it's also fun to play a Mario game, especially if it offers you a lot to do.
Mario and friends.
In the first Super Mario Bros game you could play as Mario and as Luigi, but the difference wasn't that big apart from the different outfit colours. That changed in Super Mario Bros 2 where you could definitely see the tall Luigi and the shorter Mario, but you could also play as Peach and my personal favourite Toad. Each character has his or her own special trick that makes this character fun to play, for example Toad for high jumps and Peach for being able to float in mid air. These multiple playable characters makes this game pretty unique for that time and fun to play, because if you're tired of playing as Mario this game offers you other characters which seems to be more common these days.
New enemy.
This time it's not Bowser that is the villain but Ward, this reptile like creature hates vegetables and so it's your job to feed these to them (with force) in the final battle. It's actually fun to see new enemies and new surroundings eventhough it still feels pretty familiar with the first Super Mario Bros game. I guess that's the magic of Mario games, it's familiar but still fun to play. This vegetable angle also gives you your ammunition, because you can rip the vegetables out of the ground and throw them at enemies. In case the classic jump on the head of an enemy doesn't work.
Strange game?
Super Mario Bros 2 is a bit of a weird game in the Super Mario Bros games trilogy, not just with the different enemy and with multiple playable characters but also because it's in some kind of dream world. Not that the Mushroom kingdom is super realistic but in Super Mario Bros 2 it's a dream or at least that's what it points out to at the end. Does that make this a serious game? No, but I doubt you play Mario games because you're super serious. It's a fun game that helps you get good with platforming, at least that's how it worked out for me and it's how I made my first real steps in the world of games.
