Winning/losing, does it really matter?

My twenty year old version would probably scream yes at this point, but when you get older you (hopefully) become mature and winning and losing don't seem that important anymore. But how much of that is true? Do people just say they don't care or is it really true?

Winning is important?

That depends what you're after, if you're an achievement or trophy hunter like me then winning will be necessary to get certain achievements/trophies. So wether you find it important or not you still need victories to get some achievements/trophies. But then there is also the winning gets you better weapons or other items system where winning can mean the difference between getting better gear or having to deal with the same shit. Usually winning also helps you level up faster in multiplayer, if that's a thing in multiplayer at least, so once again people will often play to win in multiplayer so they can get better stuff and level up faster. Unfortunately most people will want that, so you'll often meet other people online that compete for the same thing and that is a victory for rewards or perhaps even for glory. So is winning important? If you have a goal (better gear, achievements/trophies) then it can be important, if it's just about leaderboards and personal glory then who really cares?

Nobody wants to be a loser?

This doesn't just count for life in general, also in games losing isn't something a lot of people desire. It's a good way to feel like shit when a text on the screen says that you're a loser, it's even worse when the opponent humilates you on top of that. Some people are ok with that but there is only that much someone can take before he or she will explode in a burst of rage. It's often smart to quit before that happens, because when you're on a losing streak (you keep losing matches in multiplayer) then it's better that you take a break unless you're desperate for a victory. But losing a match doesn't make you a loser, I think a real loser is the type that teabags your corpse when the battle is over or who talk shit after the match. That's the behaviour of a real loser and not of someone that was defeated in a match. Unfortunately the lines are blurred here, people that lose can still behave like losers and winners can also behave like losers, I guess some people are just losers no matter what.

So it doesn't matter if you win or lose?

If you're a casual gamer then it shouldn't matter, I mean you just play for fun and you can't win everything. But if you're a professional gamer then winning becomes more important, for example in a tournament with a big prize. I think you know what type of gamer you are, the type that wants to win at all costs or someone that just wants to have a good time wether you win or lose. The ideal world would mean that we all have a good time and that it doesn't matter if you win or lose, but unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world and winning and losing do matter to some people. So much that cheating, manipulation and using cheap tricks are quite common in games. Which is sad because games are meant to be fun, something some people seem to have forgotten along the way.
