Batman Arkham Knight

I was very excited about this game and I thought that this game would be one of the best of this year, well things didn't turn out that great in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, Arkham Knight is a cool game and definitely fun to play but I can't say it's amazing or that it's the best game in the Arkham game series. Maybe I'm a bit harsh here but I think it's only fair to be honest and not tell people what they might expect or want to hear.

Chaos in the city.

The story starts already quite disturbing as you experience in first person view how it is to be exposed to the fear toxin of Scarecrow. Then you quickly find out that it's not just one villain, it's all villains plus a small army that tries to destroy Batman and Gotham City with it. There is also the mysterious Arkham Knight, which turned out not to be a big mystery because I guessed who he was or at least I had a strong feeling that it would be that person. Which was a bit of a disappointment but eventually it fits so I can't be mad about something like that. The game still plays pretty much like the previous games but now with a whole city for you to explore, which means a lot of gliding or using your new way of transport.

The Batmobile.

I had mixed feelings about the batmobile, sure it's cool that you can drive around in your personal tank but it takes a bit of the the mystery away. But you don't have to drive in the car, right? Wrong! This game is made for the batmobile so don't be surprised that you'll need to use it in several missions (both main and side missions) to advance, which feels a bit unpleasant in my opinion because it would've been better if you could decide for yourself. The worst are the races that are tied to Riddler trophies, if you want to catch the Riddler you need to get all trophies (243 total) and that also includes races and other batmobile activities that won't make you happy. It's just a shame that sometimes this all feels so forced, it would've been better if the batmobile was an option and not a forced choice.

Solo or not?

I was a bit confused when I first saw Batman Arkham Knight, can you play with other characters or not? Well the answer is a bit tricky, you can play with other characters but only in certain areas. For example you can play as Catwoman in the Riddler trial rooms, when you have to pick a key and when you fight alongside Batman in these trial rooms. The same counts for Nightwing and Robin, Nightwing is playable in some side missions when you fight against the Penguin and blow up his weapons. Robin is playable in a story mission where you have to catch some people, it's cool but I wish you had more freedom with that but you'll probably get separate story missions for them later in dlc. Speaking about that you also get the Harley Quinn story if you pre-ordered the game, well I can tell you that you're not missing out on a lot if you didn't pre-order the game. Why? Well it's a fun mission but it's very short, stuff like this has a lot of potential but it feels to me like Rocksteady didn't do a lot with that and that's a shame.

Conclusion.

Batman Arkham Knight is a fun game, it offers you a lot and there is a lot to do (especially if you want to do everything). But certain things are a bit repetitive and the Riddler trophies are more and more just do this and get that instead of actually using your mind with solving riddles. The batmobile takes about 40 or 50% in this game and forces its way into almost everything you do, which is a shame and I don't like that. The fights in the batmobile are also repetitive, it just feels like Rocksteady couldn't come up with proper enemies for the batmobile so just beat a group of drones and you're done. What I definitely miss is having multiple playable characters, it would've been so cool if you could play as Catwoman, Nightwing or Robin and patrol through the city. Instead you have to be satisfied with the little roles they play in this game and also the small windows of playable time you get with that. Batman Arkham Knight is a good game but not as good as some people try to make it look, I don't think this game is better than Arkham City and it's a shame that this is the end of the Arkham games because I think there is still more to be done in the Arkham universe!
