Do gamers influence the game market?

This seems easy, you say yes because popular games get sequels and games that sell terribly get nothing. Well it's not that simple because sometimes moderate games also get a sequel and very popular games don't get a sequel. Even if you as a gamer influence the game market, how much of a difference do you actually make? That's difficult to say but I do think it's safe to say that gamers have some influence on the game market. At least as long as the majority buys or ignores certain games, the same can be said about dlc for some games.

The gamer decides?

Up to a certain point I'd say, because you don't decide how the game will look like and other features. But a lot of developers do listen to fans and then they check the feedback after a first reveal or when people are allowed to play the game for the first time in a trial version. So as a gamer you definitely have some influence, not seperately but as a whole (in other words the community). After Dragon Age 2 the developers took a long time to work on Dragon Age Inquisition with a good reason because a lot of people weren't happy with Dragon Age 2. The feedback of the fans definitely lead to a more succesful and improved third part in the series, but it's not just the fans but also dedicated developers that want to deliver a fun and cool game instead of just filling their pockets with money.

Do gamers also have an influence when it comes to genres?

I think so, because sometimes first person shooters take the lead and then action/adventure takes the lead. It just depends what people want more at that point, of course there are fans of a certain genre but there are also a lot of people that aren't dedicated to one genre and they will often switch between different genres. Personally I don't see the fun in only playing one type of game, it's better to switch it up a bit. First person shooter to blow off some steam, survival horror when it's dark, a party game when you have friends over and action/adventure if you just want to relax. The shooters (first and third person) are strongly represented, but also RPGs and platformers have a huge amount of fans and I don't think these genres will disappear any time soon. Survival horror is a bit different, sometimes it gains in popularity and then it's almost gone. Perhaps with better games you have more succes, but survival horror games are usually 18+ so they are for a smaller group in the game market.

So as a gamer your opinion matters?

Sure, but one person can only do that much. As a community you can actually bring change, at least in some situations. You're not almighty and it's not that developers bow to the will of the community, but a lot of them will listen and hopefully do something with that. In the end it's just wishful thinking and hoping for the best, you can't predict what a developer will do with the knowledge he or she has but as a gamer you hope that he or she will do something good with it. When I look at games like Metal Gear Solid V and Fallout 4 then I know that the developers are doing a good job, gamers are living in a good time and have some real good things in the near future waiting for them!
