The trailer that makes you want to buy a game
Have you ever seen a trailer that made you want to buy a game? If so then the people who made the trailer are doing something right, which seems easy but in truth it´s not that easy. Of course any idiot can show some gameplay or some moments from cutscenes, but that doesn´t always convince someone to buy that game. So what does it take to convince someone to buy a game?
A good trailer isn´t defined by the length, sometimes you see a short trailer that is awesome and that makes you want to see more. But a long trailer can be boring and not saying much about the game, which makes you want to pass that game. But a bad trailer doesn´t always mean that it´s a bad game. I think a good trailer gives you some information what the game is about, things you can expect or at least give you an idea, shows some nice cinematics but also gameplay and has some nice (background) music in it. Music? Yes music, because music can help you feel something with a scene or a moment in a movie or game. But never underestimate the power of silence, that can be quite good as well in certain moments. One thing that is always dangerous about a trailer is that you might learn too much about a story, for example do you see someone die in the trailer? Of course that doesn´t have to be that way, it can be a set up to make you believe something that isn´t true.
So a short trailer isn´t always a bad one? No a short trailer can sometimes be very effective, it makes you curious what happens next and that´s often exactly what the developers are hoping for that you want to buy the game to find out what happens next. Curiosity is a powerful tool and it works well with selling something. But don´t underestimate the powerful of communication! For example if you see an incredible trailer of a movie or game then you´ll probably tell others, maybe your family or your friends and there are some that go online and talk about it in the comments of a site. This way it attracts more people that are curious about it and before you know it a lot of people have seen the trailer and even if not everyone likes it there is always a good chance that there are plenty that do like it.
A trailer that I´ve been watching a lot lately is the trailer of Metal Gear Solid V the phantom pain. That over nine minutes trailer is just fantastic because it looks awesome, you see some nice gameplay + cinematics, you see parts of the story that look quite interesting and let´s not forget the incredible music! It´s a long trailer but it grabs you by the lungs and squeezes the air out of it, making you watch the trailer breathless. If the game will be just as awesome as the trailer makes me want to believe remains to be seen, but I have good faith in that game and watching a nice trailer at least makes the wait a bit more bearable!
