SSX, it´s tricky?
Have you ever played the game SSX Tricky? If you have then you´ve probably played one of the best snowboard games that there is, because not only are the controls quite good you also have some funny characters in the game that makes it worth playing!
A lot of games try to be too serious, you have your story mode with the quest to be the best snowboarder or a skill championship where you have to do some difficult stunts to be considered as the best snowboarder. Either way I don´t consider that as fun, because it means less fun and more concentration in the game. Which is fine I gues, but sometimes you just want to play without any bullshit attached to it. SSX Tricky is exactly that, you race and you can do insane tricks but it doesn´t take a professional to actually be succesful with that! The conversations the characters have with eachother are usually pretty funny, the rivalries and friendships make it fun to play against the other characters and it might actually make you want to shove a particular person in the snow just because he or she is your rival. I´ve had so much fun playing that game solo and also playing with friends in splitscreen, absolutely a lot of fun!
So what happened to SSX after that? Well SSX 3 was ok, it didn´t support multiplayer so no splitscreen mayhem and you have this time a mountain to conquer. It´s your main goal and one could say that this is what motivates you to race and do tricks in that game. Still it didn´t feel the same to me as SSX Tricky, because SSX 3 had some of the funny characters but things just felt a bit too serious at times and leaving out multiplayer was a big mistake! Later games SSX On Tour and SSX Online (if I´m not mistaken with those names) are even further away from SSX Tricky, because I really miss playing with the characters that I love and the fun I had in that simple way of playing. I know that some developers want to do new things and try to give gamers something different with each game, of course not every developer thinks that way, but to ignore probably the best game in the SSX franchise isn´t a smart move.
I really hope that there is going to be another game like SSX Tricky, nothing too fancy and nothing too crazy. Just some snowboarding fun without anything impossible tied to it, because games are meant to be fun and if you have to unlock 90% of a game with winning things in difficult races or you have to pay for it with currency that you earn very slowly then fun isn´t the first thing that comes to my mind.
