Modern gaming vs old school gaming
So what do I mean with modern gaming and old school gaming? Modern gaming means to me that you play online with your friends, most of your friends online are friends you only know online. Old school gaming means you play a lot with friends in split screen or local game sessions, most of your online friends are people you actually know and also do other things with next to gaming.
These days it´s all about online, you play games online and you play with your friends online. Sometimes there are days that you might play more with random strangers than that you spend time with family and friends, because you enjoy playing games online with others. Is this really modern gaming? Well it is to me, I come from the time that you didn´t play online with others and if you wanted to play games with others then you invite people over and you´d play together on one screen. That might seem very lame to some people but I had a lot of fun with that. For example in Baldur´s Gate Dark Alliance on the Playstation 2 I had a lot of fun getting past a jumping section with a friend, because we both had to share the same screen one of us would often screw over the other by going to far so the other would fall in the abyss. But let´s not forget Goldeneye where you could splitscreen with up to four people and have a great time!
So modern gaming sucks? I´m not saying that, because for people who don´t have friends or friends that like to play the same games as you then it´s cool that you can play with others. I´m not saying that everyone you meet online will be your friend, sometimes there are quite annoying people online but at least it beats playing by yourself all the time. I know that I enjoy playing with others online, well not all the time but every now and then it´s fun. Because I have a feeling that if you play games by yourself all the time that you´re missing out on a lot of fun, but I can see it from that point of view because some games are just more fun to play solo. That´s why I´m not too fond of the Elder scrolls online, I like Oblivion and Skyrim because I can play the game in my own way without having to deal with other people. Add random douchebags in that and what do you get? Well some might call it fun, I call it annoying. I had my fair share of annoying douchebags in Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, because no matter how much you enjoy the story you´ll always have to face these douchebags that wait outside missions to annoy the crap out of you. It´s a nice game that should´ve been singleplayer but now gets fucked up because of multiplayer.
It´s nice that you can play games with anyone else online, but I do like to have moments of just me and some friends on the couch. You know just like in the ´old´ days, because no matter how modern gaming becomes I´ll always hold fond memories of how things were in those days. Well I´m starting to sound like an old guy, so time to stop and start gaming!
