Games that aren't what you expected
These days I don't have high expectations for games because I know that will often lead to disappointment, eventhough there are some exceptions. The trick of not being disappointed is not to have high expectations, because the higher your expectations are the bigger the chance is that you'll be disappointed. But that doesn't mean that it's not a bad thing when a game you bought isn't that much fun to play. Can you avoid that and how do you deal with this disappointment?
How do you deal with disappointment?
It helps not to have high expectations for a game but even then it can turn out to be a bad experience for you, especially games that made you wait a long time. I think a lot of Duke Nukem fans remember Duke Nukem Forever, a game that took a long time to finally launch and when it did not everyone was happy with it. I guess if you have to wait a long time things can change a lot, something you were hoping for at first might not be what you want when the game finally launches. But a game like Final Fantasy XV did much better, we all had to wait a long time for that game and the game turned out to be pretty good. So maybe it's not a guaranteed failure when it takes a long time for games to finally launch, but I wouldn't have high expectations for a game that has been delayed a lot. The best way to deal with disappointment is to have low expectations and also wash away the bad experience with a fun game, because the best cure for a disappointing game is a fun game!
Can you avoid disappointment?
Not really, well maybe if you have very low expecations of everything in your life but then you have to ask yourself what kind of life you're living. The thing is that there are good games and bad games, sometimes you play good games and sometimes you play bad games. There isn't much you can do to avoid that, well you can do some research about a game before you decide to buy it but you never get a 100% guarantee that a game won't be disappointing. Because no matter how many trailers and gameplay videos you see, how many articles you read and how long you played the demo, there is still a chance that the game will be disappointing. Some good examples are games that have a bad ending, an ending that you hated and pretty much ruined the entire game for you. That sucks but at the same time it's something that happens sometimes and there is nothing you can do to avoid that without getting spoilers. So it's better to sometimes take a chance and have to deal with disappointments than having a negative view on games with very low expecations and getting things spoiled for you just so you know that the ending will be good.
Can one bad thing in a game ruin everything?
It could, especially when it comes to endings. But if it's just one frustrating level, boss or something else in a game then you can work through that and leave it behind you. For example I hate the mage tower in Dragon Age: Origins, I really can't stand going through that fade nonsense and with the shape shifting so you can unlock new paths in a dream world. Very annoying and boring in my opinion. But the game is still fun and the moment I get through that part the game is fun to play again, but oh man going through that part of the game is just very annoying for me. Unfortunately these annoying, boring and frustrating parts are in a lot of games and as much as you would wish they weren't they are in most games. Even in Final Fantasy XV I encountered a very annoying part, it's a dungeon with a nasty puzzle. The puzzle itself isn't the annoying part even, it's the amount of high level enemies you have to fight constantly and if you make one mistake you have to go through all that again. One the plus side it does give you a lot of experience, I think I gained more than ten levels just playing in that dungeon so I can't complain that much about it. But at the moment I was in that dungeon I just hated everything, which is why I'm very happy I'm done with that. It does help if you keep in mind the bigger picture, one bad thing in a game can be frustrating but it's not the end of the world. Just fight through whatever frustrating level or boss the game throws at you and after that you can hopefully enjoy the game once more.
