Games make you depressed?
I was playing a game yesterday and something really bad happened, something that made me sad and just left me with a negative feeling that just wouldn't go away. I won't tell you which game it is, because of spoilers, but I will describe what happened. My character lost the girl he loves and one of his best friends got badly wounded, which means my character and in a way me has to live with the guilt that you couldn't save the girl and your friend is now less effective in battle because he is badly wounded. There isn't a potion that will fix this or make it go away, the game pretty much shoves this in your face and lets you deal with it. Pretty brutal but in a way quite interesting, because we all know the happy moments from games but what about the sad moments?
Why do some games make you depressed?
Because some games make you go through some bad things. For example Lost Odyssey is a game where there is a super sad moment where the main character sees his daughter after many years only to see her die, which is heartbreaking! Then there are games where one of the main characters dies, for example in Final Fantasy VII where Aerith gets murdered by Sephiroth. That's not something that leaves a lot of people emotionless, some will be sad and others might even cry. I don't blame them because some of these moments are really sad. But why are some games so sad? Well it's about telling a story and if everything goes well in the story then that could turn out to be a boring story. Now I'm not saying that in every story people have to die to make it interesting but it does make it a bit more believable. You see life isn't always fair, bad things happen to good people and if in games that would never happen then it would be more difficult to get into these games. From a minor set back to a tragic loss, these are all moments that make you think and also make you feel. Something the developers want and something that will most likely make you appreciate the game even more. Even at the time that it happened you'll be upset, because you just lost someone you probably cared about.
How do you feel better after experiencing a depressing moment in a game?
You could stop playing the game for a moment but I would encourage you to keep playing, but if you really need a break then you should take a break. My advice remains the same though because usually in games things get better and if you just push forward then you will see that for yourself. Unfortunately there are also games that have unhappy endings, ususally that has something to do with the choices you made in the game or the game is just being dumb. I mean just look at Mass Effect 3 and tell me who is happy with those endings. I can't imagine that there are people that are happy with that, the worst is that you build up to that ending with two previous games and you pretty much get slapped down and end up in misery. That's rough but that's also how games can be, it's not all rainbows and Sunshine. If you really feel depressed after something that happened in a game then you can also do something else that makes you happy. There's no need to suffer in sadness when you can do something that makes you happy. But you should always keep in mind that it's just a game, no matter how real your feelings might be.
